    Tiling onto new plaster?

Can anyone tell me how long after a bathroom wall has been skimmed, it can then be tiled onto. I thought about 3 days, am I right?

    Skimming over tile adhesive?

A friend of a friend has asked me to skim his bathroom walls which are plasterboard. He has removed the old tiles but the tile adhesive is still attached to the plasterboard. Is it possible to skim over these walls? If so, would I need to PVA the walls first? Any advice is much appreciated.

    Skimming price per m2

Thanks Danny, I'll just give him a price for the whole job then. By asking me price per m2, he's probably trying to get it done cheap. If he doesn't accept my price he can find someone else!!

    Skimming price per m2

Are you sure Danny, it don't seem much. This bathroom has 3 walls to be plastered totaling about 18m2, @ £2.50 per m2 = £45!!! Maybe if large areas were to be plastered I'd charge by the metre, yeah?

Working from left to right...or right to left

If you're right handed, sand and cement should be applied right to left, skimming from left to right. I recently finished 2 years plastering at college and that's how I was taught.

    Skimming price per m2

How much roughly per m2 would a plasterer charge. I'm just after a general idea!!
  12. D

    Skimming price per m2

They arn't offering any more work as they just what their bathroom skimmed after they removed the old tiles, but I'd say the area is approximately 18m2 (3 walls, one with a window reveal)

    Skimming price per m2

Can anyone tell me how much you charge for skimming with multi-finish per m2? I've never priced a job this way before, but I have a customer who wants to know. I normally just charge by the day.

Looking for work in the North London area

I am looking for work in the North London area, I am only currently doing the odd plastering jobs here and there, but I'm looking for something a bit more regular. I do work as a landscape gardener currently but am looking to work for in the plastering field more regularly. I finished a 2 year...

    Floating to plasterboard

Does anyone know how thick a floating coat on plasterboard should be? I know it's not normally done, I think, but it's a question in an exam paper at college.

    Angle beads?

On what coat should angle bead be applied when rendering? Before the scratch coat or after? It seems if it's applied before the scratch coat, only two thin coats can be applied. Am I right?

    Rendering garden wall

I've got a job to render a front garden wall, the piers are of brickwork and the wall is of concrete blocks. Can anyone advise me what ratio of sand and cement to use for the scratch and top coat and whether lime is necessary. Also, what preparation should I do? I've been told not to use PVA...

    What is fat??

Thanks Bod, Say for instance I was trowelling up a wall or ceiling, after each stroke or two the trowel would have wet plaster on it, I've been told this is 'fat' and not to trowel it in as this would leave 'clouds' in the finish.
  22. D

    What is fat??

I have a question on paper from college to answer. What is 'fat' found on a skimming trowel? I know it's a mixture of plaster and water, but there must be more to it than that. Help!

    One or two coats??

I thought about bonding or hardwall, but was told to use sand and cement because if the chimney isn't blocked off at the top and water comes down, it would penetrate through the brickwork and the bonding! I find this hard to believe but who's right?
  24. D

    One or two coats??

Thanks Chris, the customer doesn't want the hollow sound of dot and dab, but that would have been the prefered method. No need for vents as the opening is staying. By the way, am I right in saying that the joints of the brickwork should be raked out? as I was told not to bother. And one more...

    One or two coats??

I've got two chimney breasts to set and finish. It's to be rendered in sand and cement first then skimmied with multi-finish. The skimmining is no problem, it's the rendering, would one coat be enough then finish, or should it be two coats? Advice anyone?? The breasts are of brickwork, weather...

    Is Plastering for Me?

What are you talking about? 25 and you say you're past it!! I didn't pick up a trowel til I was 43! and I seem to be doin alright. But if you're saying "I think I'll give it a miss" it doesn't sound like it's in your heart, so perhaps you're right. But you'll be spending years training in any...

    Sponge float on finish??

I recently watched one of the Goldtrowel DVDs on perfect skimming procedures, and after applying the second coat of finish they went over it with a sponge float, I didn't understand the explanation for this, anybody know? They flattened it in again after to get rid of the lines left by the...

    Time between build and render

Thanks Spunkybum, After rendering the wall will get a couple of coats of white paint, so I don't suppose it matters if the joints are showing through.

    Why use lime?

Thanks Madmonk, now I know, you learn something new every day!
  38. D

    Why use lime?

I've been told that its personal preference whether or not you use lime in rendering. Is this true? What is the purpose of lime?

    Time between build and render

I've got a job to build a garden wall out of concrete blocks which will the be rendered. My question is, can I render it the day after it's built? Or should I wait maybe a week or so?

    Air Vent

Thanx 4 the reply. The fireplace was never used as a real fireplace, not for as long as I can remember anyway. There was an old gas fire there which had to be taken away for health and safety reasons. It looked fairly clean inside, so I don't think there's any soot.
  41. D

    Lines showing through skim

That's right, it's recomended that plaster boards should have a 3mm gap between them.
  42. D

    Air Vent

I've recently bricked up an old fireplace and plastered it, and I've now been told I should have put an air brick in it. Why is this necessary? I can now just drill some holes and screw a vent to the outside, but was just wondering why it needs to be there in the first place.

    Plastering onto tiles?

Can anyone tell me whether it's possible to plaster over glazed tiling? Someone told me that the plaster would crack, but I don't understand why that is. I would have thought that if the tiles are unibonded first then plastered that it would be ok. Any advise??

    Rendering queery??

I have recently been asked to do a rendering job for somebody. They are telling me that it can be done with just one coat. I'm only just starting out as a plasterer after college. Cracking in Finish

Thanks for the advise guys. Re-plastered that wall, scraped off where it had cracked, cleaned it up and used a different PVA (Travis Perkins brand is crap!) I put 2 coats on as advised, the last one thicker than the first, left it to go tacky and away I went! After trowelling up, I have a...
