    Plastering over old plasterboard

Cheers lads, The boards aren't too damaged, it's just the front of it has been peeled slightly in several largish patches that I don't really think taping would be an option with. The boards core hasn't been exposed. I was just worried that Pva and plastering would be the Equivalent to...

    Plastering over old plasterboard

My father in law has asked me to plaster his spare room, it's a new build house and he's stripped the wallpaper back to plasterboard, however some of the plasterboard has the surface torn from the wallpaper being taken off and I don't want to re-plasterboard. How do you suggest plastering that...

    Boxed in pipes

I'm doing a sitting room tomorrow and the chimney breast has heating pipes boxed in flush next to it with ply wood. I cant rebox it with plaster board as the board will be proud of the breast. I'm obviously wanting to plaster the breast and the box in one but I cant remember what that chicken...

    Cleaning at a job

I asked this a while ago but I've been away from the forum for a while to return and see loads of new names so I want some new input: What is your routine for keeping your gear and buckets clean when working by yourself? I dont use a spot board so thats one less thing to worry about but this is...

    Multi finish time between coats

Oasis I might just be being stupid but can you elaborate on what you are on about with the scrim tape method as I dont get it, is it to plaster a large area and to split it up?

    Straight or smooth?

When plastering walls in old houses, is it general practice for most plasterers to: a) just plaster over the wall and get it smooth or b) plaster using a straight edge to get the walls smooth and straight? I was just wondering, as I did a old house the other day and it already had skirting...

    Business cards

What do you put on your business cards apart from the obvious business name and number?

    nice smooth finish but.................

I see that finish of the unpainted walls irrelevant, its how they look finished that'll get you more work in my opinion!!!

    lighting

I didn't use a light until I noticed a few misses on one wall, it was because it was the window wall and the light was in my eyes and not on the wall, it looked fine until the next day when more light was on the wall. So the next time (and every time since) I use a lamp and personally I...

    Removing tiles from plaster board

My mate has said that he may need my services soon as he's taking tiles down in his bathroom (which is completely tiled) and he says that the walls are d&d. (1) Is this likely to leave the plasterboard in a right mess? (2) Whats the best way to remove the tiles to limit the damage? He was...

How do you know how much to mix?

So Nicksey would you do an extra coat with the three bag or lay the first one on thicker?
  17. S

How do you know how much to mix?

Would that not give you some problems when you come to trowel up though? I suppose you could muddle through it though worst case.

How do you know how much to mix?

This almost happened to me the other day, have any of you's ever ran out of plaster? What would you do if this ever happened.

How do you know how much to mix?

When plastering a large area, how do you know how much to mix for your first coat? Is it just experience or do you use the formula where you divide by 9 to help work it out? I've got a 17m2 artex ceiling to do tomorrow and was looking to mix about a bag and a half for my first mix, about right...

    WBA or Bondit types?

Whilst I'm talking about it, how messy is it when applying with a roller!!!!! I'm not sure if I had the wrong type of roller on the end or what but it was spraying everywhere. I was covered by the end, I agree much quicker than a brush but much more messy.

    WBA or Bondit types?

I've prepared the artex ceiling today in readiness to turn up and hammer it tomorrow morning, I've only managed to get one coat of WBA on, this this ok? Had to do my best to make it stretch to both ceilings, it looked like I had loads (bought two tubs) at one point and I almost ran short towards...

    sorry pva again

I had this exact problem on saturday, but IO noticed it after my first coat when I was giving it a trowel, fortunately the second coat went on perfect and had no problems, but like Macky suggested I would've just had to put a third coat on if I needed to but thank god I dodn't because I was fed...

    Filling in new wiring/plumbing

God, what a job this was in the end!!! All the radiators (thanks bigsegs for the tutorial) had to come off as the pipes were chased underneath them and up the walls, I had to learn how to be ambidexterous and use the pipe trowels, midget trowels, filling knifes and almost every other tool in the...

    Filling in new wiring/plumbing

So would you not recommend bonding then? I've just bought it for this job, not that that matters like but I'm starting at 7.30 and the shops wont be open then.

    Filling in new wiring/plumbing

Also just for reference could someone tell me how to remove radiators incase I need to (its a brand new combi system with new radiators) I though I read a post on it recently but I cant find it anywhere. I know I dont ask much ;D ;D ;D

    Filling in new wiring/plumbing

I know i'm always asking questions and it must seem like i'm a complete novice, well i am just starting out and doing jobs for friends and family. I've done a course and can skim great but it just seems that ordinary skimming jobs are few and far between and i've had more awkward patching jobs...

I've never noticed a massive difference between them, would it have caused me some problems if I used multi?
  29. S

    WBA or Bondit types?

Thanks for the advice gents, but one last thing, will this give me more time before my mix goes off?
  30. S

    WBA or Bondit types?

Yeah this is my first full artex ceiling, done a few patches, i've used PVA quites a bit but never WBA.
  31. S

    WBA or Bondit types?

Sorry it quoted me the wrong big segs post earlier, I am on about using WBA
  32. S

    WBA or Bondit types?

That'll do me I suppose, so what ratios do you mix it? Is there anything that I sould look out for, I really have no idea with this stuff!!! Is it true it will give me extra time before the plaster goes off?
  33. S

    WBA or Bondit types?

I thought that all plasterers were tight!!! Who's going to pay for that? I knew it was in wickes but i haven't got one very close to me, (well 18 miles but the price of petrol and all that ;)) How much is it in wickes?
  34. S

    WBA or Bondit types?

I've got an artex ceiling to do next week and I've got the massive bonus of being able to get in the day before to do my prep, this being the case I was going to get some WBA or bondit type stuff, I dont have it in my local builders merchant, I have others like B&Q or travis perkins, can someone...

How long to wait before artexing?

Actually whilst im on about timings, I wouldn't mind a few other things cleared up once and for all: 1. How long do you wait before skimming boards after sticking them using drywall adhesive? 2. How long before skimming after using hardwall or bonding? 3. And as the original post says, how...

  39. S

    Patching an artex ceiling

How long do I wait for the finish before I start with the artex? Also is it better to cut the board the exact size of the hole and fix it in with battens so that its just about flush with the ceiling level or better to have the board cut slightly longer and have the board recessed in the hole?
  40. S

    dots

How do you apply the dots to the wall when d&d, I've just seen a dvd where they use a hawk and trowel and apply it that way, I was shown with a bucket trowel where you would get a decent amount on the trowel and tap it quickly and firmly against the wall with the corner of the trowel to get it...

    Board adhesive

Ok i think I will board then, the only problem with that it that the doors and windows aren't recessed into the wall and so it would be difficult to put small strips of plaster board down the insides, so whats the remedy for that then or do you just get on with it the best you can?
  43. S

    Board adhesive

How far does a bag of board adhesive go? I have a wall thats about 13ftx7.5ft high that is exposed brick and needs plastering, it has a door and a window in that area. I was just wondering if it would be cheaper and quicker to bond rather than mess on cutting boards in an awkard patch. The wall...

    Patching Pebbledashing. Help Needed!!!

  47. S

    Patching Pebbledashing. Help Needed!!!

How much do you think it'll cost to get all the materials to do this job, i'm guessing that I'll prob have to buy in quantities much more than I need. And how much would you charge to patch it to a customer? If the difference isn't massive i think i'll just pay someone to do it.

How do you apply your PVA

JUst a quick question, I always use a 6" brush to put my pva on the walls but i'm thinking that a roller might be better. How do yous apply yours? and do you use different for walls and ceilings?
