My mates misses was sorting the loft out when she decided to put her foot between the joists, bad move. Now they're left with this hole to constantly provide them with a cool draft, its cheaper than air con i suppose.
Can yous share your expert advice as to how you's would go about making good of this ceiling, thanks.

id cut it back to 1/2 way accross the next joists, and patch board in, or screw some lath accross the back and patch a bit in te hole..
then id skim the whole lot...
or you could just skim it level in the patch, get a really tiny bag of powdered artex, mix it really wet, brush a bit on and get an artex brush (looks like a poly float with sea anenome style rubber wobbly bits) and use it to stipple it...wont be perfect but near enough..

the trouble with patching artex is that its almost impossibe to match excisting you will always see the patch so your best bet is to skim

i'd skim it too a patch will be blatent.I always cut the board back flush with the joist then screw 2x1 to the joist to pick the board up.I'll just screw batten right round the square as well overlapping the hole.Hope that makes sense i know what i mean

instead of cutting back to the joists could you over cut a board lengthways and pull it into the hole with some bonding ................its used on walls but would this be ok for a ceiling patch? i.e more movement?

patching as bigsegs says will be ok, stipple pattern is fairly easy to match, just gotta get the consistancy right, test on some spare board fist.

trust me if you patch it will stick out like a saw thumb you cannot match artexing it will look pants, for all those who say patch it u have obviously never tried to patch artexing its not like finish where you can feather in

ive patched loads mate, usually cos thats all the customer wants to pay for at the time...i agree you cant get it perfect, but that particular pattern is probably the easiest to achieve...
some people dont want the hassle of having the entire ceiling skimmed right at that present moment and if you patch it for em theyll prolly ring you back after a few months to skim it, and possibly the rest of the room while your at it...decorating time and all that....
someone could do that patch in just over an hour using a bit of board, some easy fil and some artex..
trick is to get it real wet and just encourage it to drip, thats why the 'drips' are soft and round not stiff and spikey....if it goes spiky its too thick...
be best to offer em both options u think?

when i've done stippling in the past i did it with a sheep skin roller or one of those foam rollers with holes in it. i wouldnt use a stippling pad. also that wickes ready mixed texture coating is quite good

i used to work for a loft conversion company, some numpty would put their foot though a ceiling every other job, so i've had plenty of experience. matching stipple is piss easy, i've patched swirl, broken leather and circle. i wouldn't say it was possible if it wasn't.

truth is, most spreads wouldnt have the patience over a little job like that, theyd just wanna board it up and throw some finish at it...chances are a good diy enthusiast would make a better job of a patch, wouldnt matter to him if it took all day..needs an old bloke in an escort estate and a step ladder :D
or if youre like pug was, on day rate, you can just take however long and just mess about with it till its right...

That was mi old dad that, made me smile, old escort estate, roll-up permanantly attached to lips, on dole for 16 years, odd jobbing, started most jobs between dinner and tea time, finish at 10.30pm some nights just in time for pub.

How long do I wait for the finish before I start with the artex?
Also is it better to cut the board the exact size of the hole and fix it in with battens so that its just about flush with the ceiling level or better to have the board cut slightly longer and have the board recessed in the hole?

fit it exact, very slightly recessed, scrape back 2" of surrounding artex, tape or scrim the joint and then feather it in. have cuppa, apply pattern.
