Multi finish problems.

Lucky for you I am not blind. I was in a bit of a rush and I put too much water in my bucket without noticing.
not something I have done before and certainly not something I will do again.
I do know that a builders bucket filled to just below the pouring lip is just enough water for a 25kg bag of multi finish. mixing it with slightly less water for a ceiling to avoid mess. but then I only do that if I have to use a ladder.
if I am on a job where I can set up enough trestles and boards so I can reach the ceiling then I mix up with a normal amount of water.
when using a ladder I mix the plaster with a bit less water to avoid spilling any when climbing up a ladder.

Oh dear :RpS_lol:

I am not thick, it was a simple mistake and since starting this thread (as I have already explained) I figured out the mistake that I had made and why I had made it. who here has never made a mistake in their life?
you show me a man who says he has never made a mistake and I will show you a liar.

I have never made a mistake, never ever! :)
Now show me that liar??
Bet it's a cockney?
Is it, is it a cockney? :RpS_unsure:

Oh but you will - I've been saying that for 30 years and still do it on the odd occasion :RpS_thumbup:

I am slowly losing interest with this forum. which is a real shame as I like it here.

Don't lose interest - just read, absorb, learn :RpS_thumbup:

You still make mistakes after 30 years, this is the only real mistake I have made in 3 years and I am being slagged off something rotten.
the only other mistake I have made was a few months ago, I nearly started to mix up before I had covered the plasterboard joints.
even I had a laugh about that.

I doubt i have told you but you may of read either on here or on other forums, i once cut a board wrong and like you i was ripped to bits for it, but after years of fighting my case and gathering evidence it was proven i didnt actually cut the board wrong i had picked up the wrong piece OH how we laughed. xx

Who cares, the way I work has served me well so far.

You really don't know when to just shut the **** up do you.

You haven't been ripped to shreds for mixing up wet gear but because of both your keenness to bite and your general attitude.
I know you're going to reply straight back at this post and that's because you can't see what's going on in front of you.
Now shut up, calm down and enjoy the banter on here in future.

Rentals, rentals? you never mentioned that tell us more :)

Sorry to hear you're losing interest in the forum Marshall. If someone was to post some links up to G** porn sites would you stick around a bit longer?

I never measured out in litres in my life...one full black bucket of water was enough to do one bag of finish.... I like my mix quite wet :)

Danny

PS let the ripping begin....

My luck seems to be getting worse and worse.
earlier today I mixed up a bag of multi finish to overskim a ceiling for a friend.
I didn't make the same mixing mistake this time, instead I had a full mix that set solid in about 10 minutes.
I mixed it up fairly quickly, my mortar board was nice and wet, so was my hawk and my trowel, yet it set solid before I had even finished the first coat. as a result I can hardly move my right arm, the plaster was so sticky it was pulling off what was already on the ceiling, and the whole thing will have to be skimmed again at my expense.
what the hell is going on?

When I was at college we mixed this stuff by hand with a stick and a mixing wheel, which took about 10 minutes give or take, no fancy mixers for us. we were still able to get the mix on to a board, clean out the bucket ready for the next mix and still get two coats of plaster on before it went off. I feel like I am back plastering for the first time all over again.
this is the second time in two weeks I have had a mix of multi finish go off far too quickly.
could it just be that I have a bad batch, or am I making a huge mistake without even knowing it?

I would say its a bad batch and or old stock, the older it get the quicker it will set.Sounds like a nightmare better luck next time.

I do remember being told that BG use a retarder in the plaster to stop it going off so quick.
they add more in summer so the warm temperature doesn't dry it out too quickly and they add less in the winter months.
this explains why I have had two bags of multi set so fast on me.
I'm hardly slow but I'm not as fast as I could be. even still I have easily managed to get two coats out of a bag while the plaster left on the board is still workable.

We used to use trisodium cytrate in casting plaster to slow the set if you phone me I will tell you where to buy some. you can ask the seller all about it. 01406351001

@marshall how long are you mixing for cos you could be over mixing it this could cause it to set faster ?

I didn't have this many problems when I first started at college, back then I had never even picked up a trowel before.
