Hi everyone,

We are Ashburnham Insurance, a Tradesman Insurance specialist, and are currently sponsoring The Plasterers Forum, helping @Danny to keep this great forum going!

I've set up this thread give you an opportunity to ask any questions you might have relating to public liability insurance (or any other business insurance) and we will do our best to answer them. Alternatively, if you want to get an insurance quote from us, head over to our Plasterers Insurance page or give us a call for free on 08001696137 and we will be pleased to help.

(If you are a self employed plasterer with 4+ years experience and want £1,000,000 public liability cover, you can expect to pay between £54 and £72 a year with us depending on a few other factors. We can also cover other trades, employees, tools, etc. so can make a policy to fit your requirements. Any questions then feel free to contact us directly or ask below.)

Mines about £90 , the usual draw back is I've got to pay first £250 , £500 for services damage , if I'm just doing a room I tell the customer my work is at their own risk if I slip and damage anything by accident , the other option is I charge accordingly

Morning all,

@bprenderingservicesltd Could you tell me what the machine is and I will confirm. In general we can provide cover for hand tools either including or excluding theft from unattended vehicles. Cover can be up to £5k in total with a single tool limit of £500. We may have other options if this doesn't suffice.

@bof The excess with our main insurer is normally £100. Sometimes goes higher for less experienced people. Definitely worth checking on your existing policies.

@Tom81 £5,000,000 cover with us is between £84 and £107 per year assuming you have 4+ years experience and no other major factors that might affect cost (i.e. claims history, etc.).

@paulf I think that's a straight decline from our insurers, sorry

@McBentLegs The price is certainly high compared to our cover (see a couple of lines up) but it does depend what else is cover (may include tools, legal assistance, etc). Always good to compare price AND cover.

I may have to give you guys a call when I renew mine, both liability and tool cover.

Is the tool cover just for in transit or is it cover at all times, whether vans on your drive, outside a job etc/ some insurance companies are sneaky with their get out clauses regarding tool cover I found.

@McBentLegs Tools cover does differ from Insurer to Insurer. The main company we use you has the option of cover to be included in an unattended vehicle or not (regardless of van being at home, job, etc.). If you have the unattended cover, the main clause is that there must be signs of forcible entry to the vehicle and worth noting that the excess and price are a bit higher on this extra cover.

@Rossi46 It can be a shock when a single self-employed person takes on their first employee and adds them to their insurance. Straight away your Public Liability premium is doubled as there are two of you instead of one and then you add the Employers Liability price on top of that.

Employers Liability for a Plasterer may only be about £20 but this means a £60 premium for just you would jump to £140 for you and 1 employee (2 x £60 + 1 x £20). (NB. calculations are a little more complex than this but this is roughly speaking true.)

Yep it’s the employers liability that’s a chunk of money, I have a fair few lads on mine.

How long does it take your company to answer the phone when making a claim?

@tapit We are not a call centre so when you call us there is no "push 1 for this, push 2 for that", you just get straight through. Also, last time I checked our phone stats, 98% of our calls are answered within 3 rings.

In terms of making a claim, it is slightly out of our hands as claims are reported directly to the insurer and each would be different. Almost every insurer now has a 24/7 dedicated claims number to ring but I have no stats on how quick they answer. It would certainly fluctuate based on time of the day or if there has been a major incident (storms, floods, etc.). Ultimately as your broker, we are on hand to help out if the insurer was not handling your claim to your satisfaction.

I've checked the numbers on this forum, all appear okay. Our main number is 01702347400 and we have a freephone number of 08001696137 (which ultimately goes through to the same place). I've tried calling both and no problems. If you or anyone else is still having problems then send me a DM here and I'll investigate further.

Just to clarify, the £54 to £72 indication in my opening post is for a single self employed plasterer with 4+ years experience and £1,000,000 public liability cover. If you add an employee you effectively have to pay for 2 x the Public Liability price and then add 1 x the Employers Liability price so ends up being a bit higher (see my previous post). Another point to note is that if you are a Limited Company, you yourself are classed as an employee so you would need to add another Employers Liability price to the total. Sorry if the premium was more than you expected but hopefully this explains the difference between your price and my initial post.

Just taken out a policy with simply business. The same details, but with machine cover as well, for 72 quid less.

Pays to shop around.

Thanks any way.

My phone was the issue. Apologies.

Why does the director have to have employers liability for themselves ? If the director has an accident then in theory can they sue themselves?
It is a legal requirement to have Employers Liability Insurance for all employees. A director of a Limited Company is classed as an employee. The director/employee could in theory sue their employer (the Limited Company).

There is an exception when Employers Liability Insurance is not required which is a Limited Company employing only their owner where that employee also owns 50% or more of the issued share capital in the company.

I suppose there is always that accident not down to negligence that may qualify for a claim so yes it makes sense to be covered.

I've found Meerkats to be most competitive...tried a few brokers some said they could match but with alot of hassle sending screenshots of meerkats and info typed in X
