I am stuck with this one , 28m2 ceiling (L&P) which was artexed in 1982 .ie asbestos ,it has a very large stipple, well more like clumps about inch and half deep and thick ,customer wants it covered ,but says she has to keep the coving :-0

Give her a price for supply n fit new cove, and give her the more expensive and messier option of carefully takin down the ceiling, need to get an asbestos company involved blah blah blah.£££(but you can't guarantee the cove will stay up):RpS_wink: batten, overboard and new covin is the way to go, and cheaper than above:RpS_thumbup: tell them what needs done:RpS_thumbup:

You are not allowed scrape it back apparently, we had some to do before xmas, but once we pva'd it, the artex peeled off, not saying this will happen to yours, the legal way is to pva it, then bond it and then skim, you would lose a bit of the cove but not too much..

Hi Conditor,

Welcome to the forum.

L+P with an artex covering is already putting a weight burden on the ceiling. You should be able to keep the coving in place: measure the rough average of the stipple and add 3mm for the skim. Is there enough of the coving profile remaining? If yes, then use a bonding agent followed by a tight coat of skim or bonding to hide the stipple. Then finish with another two coats. It's the only solution if she doesn't want the ceiling replaced. However, make her fully aware that you're adding even more weight to the ceiling now and there's no guarantee that it will remain in place. She should also be made aware that water from the plaster might cause some of the paint to peel off the edges of her coving.

Best regards,

Minh

The op says the stipple is like inch and a half deep clumps???there will be half of covin left when he's done!!:RpS_unsure:

Just a small point but if you think that adding more layers of plaster to a ceiling might make it unsafe and you tell the customer so ,why would you then go a head and carry out the job knowing that in your opinion it is creating a potential danger.:RpS_confused:

It's her decision :)

That's what terms and conditions are for. mine say any overskimming is not guaranteed and I cannot be held liable for any damage caused.

if the ceiling will take the extra weight , supose realy youd have to find the joist and get the screw gun out . then bond and skim and add a new profile to whats left of the coving youd still loose some of the original cove but its a compramise.

in this situation you have to push for an overboard, there are too many potential problems so shes gota take a hit on the coving and have it done properly. be better fo both partys in the long run.

you wouldn't be able to overboard ,even if coving was removed stipples (or clumps)to big only way to do it ,was a suspended ceiling , Anyways no matter some other spread has agreed to scrape it back and skim it for £200 so its his problem now,

this has been bought up so many times now, the only problem i see with it is the weight issue and the coving profile
