How to Check for Asbestos Before Damp Proofing?

Hi everyone,

Hope you're all doing alright! I've got a question about a job I'm working on and could use some advice. I'm on a project with an older house (probably from the 60s or 70s) that’s got some damp problems in the basement. The client wants to get the damp sorted and re-plaster, but before we dive in, we need to make sure there’s no asbestos lurking around. There’s some old Artex on the walls, and now we’re wondering if it might have asbestos in it.

Has anyone here dealt with asbestos while working on damp-proofing jobs? When you’re prepping walls for damp treatment, how do you check for asbestos? If it’s there, what’s the safest way to get it removed? I’ve heard it’s a job for specialists, but the cost is putting the client off a bit. Any tips for keeping costs down or managing this kind of thing? Also, what’s the deal with asbestos testing – how’s it done, and how much does it usually cost?

Really appreciate any experiences or pointers you can share. I’ve been reading through the forum for a while, and you lot always have solid advice!

U need to run a dehumidifier for 24 hours to take out any condensation and damp, then run a air purifier for 24 hours, put an industrial scale fan down there that blows plenty of cold air, once the need for a fart arises let one rip if it disappears like a fart in the wind it’s fine and the artex can be removed scraped etc,if the fart lingers and the obvious smell of intestinal gases circulates around the room, then the artex has asbestos and will need to be removed professionally before any plastering work is undertaken
