i agree with the others best to board it with it being single skim. i you did render it a sbr cement slurry splaterdash will give a key to render too but as said you will open yourself up to damp problems

you could have applyed the second coat to early so when you were troweling up you were also moving the first coat

your looking at about 3mm on first coat once you have flattened the first coat cleaned up any angles and cleaned tools buckets etc you should be ready to knock up second coat and lay on. you should only need about half the amount second coat

if its just an electric fire going in and the backgroung is brick hardwall it and skim should be fine.
