i agree with the others best to board it with it being single skim.
i you did render it a sbr cement slurry splaterdash will give a key to render too but as said you will open yourself up to damp problems

what is the surface your skimming over is it a sand and cement surface maybe this will pull in very fast and cause it to crack.

i dont think you can do a city and guilds in one week it wont give what you need to learn 1 week may only give you a certain module but what you want to be looking at is a 6 week ica this will give you a city and guilds and i would also advise on taking the nvq option aswell.

i would personaly recomend doing a week course first then if you take to it and enjoy it then take it further and get a city & Guilds and NVQ qualifacation this will make you more attractable to an employer ;)

i partly agree in what you are saying, but what a 10 day course can give you is a starting base. from this you can analyse wether you have the ability to carry on with the chosen skill and take it further

there is a variety of ages all with different levels of experiance. all that combined together offers some very good practical advice

where abouts are you from? try a google searh and see what comes up for your area then post the places on here some one may know the place and advise from there
so if going through the osat route you find an assessor to come out and have a look at your work. if he is then happy with your work he can sign you off for a nvq

regards to the cscs card i thought it was nvq or formly recognised certificate like city & guilds.
