Do some of you stick to a plastering contractor or do you take on bigger jobs like extensions or general building contractor. Doing the full works.

Thinking going partners with a plumber. He an do most jobs like me. I can't do plumbing and can do everything else like him he can't do plastering but can do everything else.

Have to start somewhere. Don't think there is enough work here for one trade. Might lead to big things.

I used to do lofts from scratch but moved areas so stuck to what I know? I am thinking of taking on building work with a mate who is a bricky and I know a few good tradesmen and that is the problem when you take on two jobs, knowing good tradesmen, but they are always busy lol that's what is giving me second thoughts.

we only carry out plastering.
you can earn money as a small builder but going into partnership for me is a no. it is to much trouble every decision you need to talk to your partner. you are also responsible for your partners tax bill, to much risk. you can employ a plumber without giving him half of the money.

There's nothing wrong with trying to better yourself, all successful builders had to start somewhere but in my experience partnerships rarely work. It's impossible to agree with someone all the time.

And thinking about it plumbers cause most problems for any trade, never there when you need them, tools everywhere, rads on walls before decorations, pipes for us to skim behind and leaks. Fooooking plumbers!

They are earning a lot more than us plasterers in Ireland.

I personally wouldn't go into partnership with anyone again I did it a few years back with a very good friend who I'd known from school days. things went well for a while but money does strange things to people, he left and now we don't even speak to each other. Someone once told me if your going to start a business do it on your own if things go tits up you've only got yourself to blame and when things are going good you can look back and think that's my hard graft and dedication why I've succeeded. I wish I'd have listened to him in the first place

I partially agree with that but then you run yourself ragged keeping up...

Can be tough starting out though. If your on your own it's hard to get work done. Easier with 2 people. Don't have to pay a wage out every week of you do t have enough work.

I have a silent partner on a few of my projects... he has money and plenty of it but also a very very good business man :D

It works well because he lets me do what i do best and he does not get involved unless I ask for it :D

There's no way that I'd ever do a partnership locked into the same business. I watched my Dad go in a few times with partners and it never ended up well. I had a real-estate partner in an apartment building and I was so glad to get out of that deal. I have good luck co-bidding on jobs with two different sheetrock contractors. We just bid our part of the work and who ever has the largest part of the contract deals with the contract and billing.

Doesn't sound a good idea. Just thought I couldn't do the work myself and if in a partnership there would be no weekly wage for an employee cause we won't be busy for the first few months.

We could always go our separate ways after a year

Partnerships are like a marriage, easy to get into, hard to get out of, I considered one with a mate a few years ago, thankfully it didn't take off. he's a proper bellend now.

a local, medium size building firm with a work force of about 200 subs out small works to small firms.

You'd be better off employing a multi trade person on your books. Pay him a month in arrears and up his money if he's good.

a month in hand, we would not start if it was a week in hand !
trust in god, everyone else pays cash.
If you pay in arrears you got the chance to see what he's about. It means he puts in 2 months work by the time he gets paid for the first month. Probably uncommon these days, farmers love it. Some people unable to see themselves out for a day these days, let alone 2 months. But this is an option.

the most important item to anyone is the ability to collect their payment.

Place ive been all week - possibly the best customer ive ever had .... hacked all the old plaster off top to bottom, skirts off, all walls brushed down and clean for when I got there ..

Offered me my money before id finished and even gave me a 40 quid tip .... if every week was like that lol

Never ever be afraid to ask for what your owed when your finished or you;ll walk away wondering when your getting paid.... who needs that at the back of your mind after grafting !!

I wish I was employed some days/weeks nice to be able to switch the phone off and unplug the internet for the weekend :D... oooh and a holiday without any technology!! That would be epic!!

A good days work would put you in hospital lol

We do plastering and external work, that's plenty enough for us.

I have good mates who do the full works and to be honest, the headaches far outweigh the pay for me.

@Danny .... you couldn't go a week without the t'internet I bet lol .... you'd come back to the forum being changed to the plasterers porn hub lol

I enjoy not being connected to be honest... I am sat in front of 3 screens for 18 hours a day.... it does wear thin
