How ironic we had just joined Europe then and just about to leave now

the vote to join the then common market was 2 to 1 to join.
the argument was that Europe was leaving the uk behind. we would be better off trading with Europe then sending ships around the world to pick up are goods.

Do we not trade more with the rest of the world than we do with the eu anyhow?
Just remember leaving isn't because of trade it's because of immigration it's because they want a United States of Europe which is the "project" they are unelected they are hugely corrupt of 28 countries only 7 are net contributors, hence its failing and cannot continue as they are

the common market that we signed up for has no resemblance to european union of today. it just grew completely out of hand. i was quite happy when there was only 9 countries in the union but as you say there is now far to much dead wood.

one of the ideas was as the deepest water in Europe is at Rotterdam that super tankers would unload there and place the goods in their huge storage warehouse base, then the goods could be taken across the channel to Felixstowe and down the river into Germany. then we could cut down our merchant fleet and costs of transport.
