Over the past few months, I have noticed that the ceiling in my basement has started to come down due to dampness. My neighbour on the side closest to the damp had his basement tanked a couple of years ago and I’m wondering if this is the cause of the issue, as I can find no leak or damp in my living room directly above.

Although my basement did have some salt deposits on the external wall before, until now, there has never been a significant issue with dampness over the 20 years that I have owned the property. I attach some photos showing the problem and the position of the party wall. The wall to the right is the external wall and it contains a window.

Any thoughts as to what may be causing the problem would be most welcome. Any suggested solutions would also be very welcome.

Basements are always a nightmare. As your neighbour has tanked their basement I guess the the water can no longer penetrate their basement so the water has to go some were.
It follows the path of least resistance, so you're probably right.
