I like the freedom of it, but I despise plastering in general so now look for an easier path.
For me that's working for smaller house builders where I can leave my tools and forget about having to find work.

f**k getting phone calls, looking at jobs, buying materials, roll and strolling carpets, shitty banter with other folk in builders merchants, chasing invoices...etc etc
And I still work the hours I want (y)

I don't see the point letting someone make money of my efforts when with a little bit of savvy and self belief you can, quite easily, keep all that money for yourself. I've not had a boss since I finished my apprenticeship thirty eight years ago. I don't even sub out my services to builders or the likes. The cut is all for me and that's the way it will stay ! Your very welcome .

I’m like you mate I think the trade has changed to much from the old days,I can’t knock the trade it’s served it’s purpose and I’ve done well from it but every year that passes I’m starting to say f**k this s**t and I’m not anywhere as enthusiastic about it as I once was

some random stuff ,
1.self employed 34 year, freedom to be your own boss and done well from it, despite ups and downs over the years, busy busy and then the quite times ,both can be a worry,
2. impossible for most of us to work for anybody again, we are unemployable,
3. know a joiner who packed in , joined tesco, could not handle being told what to do, and having his breaks on time every day, lasted 4 weeks, back on the tools now, never again he says.
4. know a painter who went self employed, but did not like meeting people, postman now,
5. know a joiner left his wife and 2 daughters for a customer, his wife divorced him, and his new love kicked him out after 3 months, now living back with his parents, and his 2 daughters ignore him completely,
6. i got arrested and charged with common assault , fined 184.00 quid, due to a particuley deeply unpleaseant customer.
7. worked in houses that were haunted, spirits/strange noises etc.
8. lots of tips over the years ranging from binoculars/bible/17 tins fray bentos steak pies/bottles whiskey.
9. never known as many plasterers about these days, so many,
10. met some absoloute nut jobs over the years

7. worked in houses that were haunted, spirits/strange noises etc.
This reminded me of a shop in Bury St Edmunds where I was working .
The daughter and her mother told me that they thought the loft was haunted as they had heard noises . They ask me if I would go up into the loft with the daughter to have a look. While we where in the loft I noticed that the daughter had a cobweb on the side of her face. I went to remove the cobweb and my finger nail just touched the woman's face. Well the scream she let out was loud. We both went back downstairs laughing. The mother asked what the hell have you 2 been up to!

I’ve got to the point where I can’t be arsed with domestic work and dealing the public. They’re so needy and demanding and it’s getting worse.
Had a run of new builds and a couple of HMO’s and enjoyed it. Turn up, do your bit and f**k off home without earache all day and without having to keep everything spotlessly clean. Completely stress free. Come and go as I please.
I swear, if someone asks me exactly what date I’m coming or exactly what time I’ll be coming or exactly how long it’s going to take or can I touch in some holes they’ve had for 30 years, I’ll strangle them.

Think of the benefits, washing done, tea made, no more forth road bridge type renovation constantly, ear ache.
And she ( the customer) must of been a good shag so memory wanks.
