ps

this is the plasterers forum not "the i plaster in between other jobs forum"

I doubt @Danny will agree with that. If you only allow time served, fully qualified, all aspects plasterers who work at that and nothing else full time and haven't retired, there'll only be three or four people posting!

As I've said before,I don't have an issue with multi trading to be honest if your competent, hanging a door for instance is basic stuff, skimming a wall is basic stuff. A good builder will act as a principal contractor and sub it out acting as a project manager and most good builders don't get there hands dirty for a living.

id be very surprised if most people on here were multi traders, please correct me if I'm wrong

I'm not suggesting they are, my point is that there are very few 'proper' plasterers still working. By 'proper' I mean time served, fully qualified and experienced in all aspects of the trade.

You can't claim trade specialisation without all those things. There are fewer and rewer with all those things, and I reckon people with that lot are in a small minority on the forum.

yep defo agreed !! i lay screeds for several "plastering firms"- because none of their blokes can !!

I'm time served, level 3 papers etc aswell as a fibrous hand, but it years since I've done any plastering and even longer since I did any fibrous bench work. When I did my time there wasn't coloured renders, ewi etc but now it's all I do, so I've picked up those skills over the years by doing so you can pick up basic joinery or tiling etc, to add to your plastering skills.

me, rigsby, theplasterman & zombie

i agree

Lol...the chosen few!!!

I really can't believe what's happened to this trade in my short 15 yrs...is this really all we are now just another skill for the handyman's list...

It used to be the case that people/other trades would say I'll have a go at anything else bar plastering...

Yes always incredibly hard graft but something that would stand you well as a career/trade...

Think I'd better get on blower and get my old contract work back if this is domestic work in2016....

Move with the times then, If you can't beat em join em.

must be just me that got into this game because i enjoyed it and was passionate.

seems now its just driven by ££££.

plenty of opportunity and progress to be made within plastering as well as money, branching out into modern rendering is just one opportunity to expand

My missus used to say why don't I advertise -all the other trades and my answer was I would be looking at ten times as many jobs I won't be getting. Like beddy says if you leave a good job then you become a builder on recommendation not because you have it on your van. I can do all the trades to a good standard without sounding to big headed but that's because I have always had a go and I'm very meticulous. The last job I done was a wet room and I wasn't going to do all the plumbing coz it was a shower that went in the loft and wasn't fed direct off the hot and cold feed. My mate was supposed to do it but was to busy so I had no choice but to do it but he was at the end of the phone and I rang him a few times but got their in the end. I also do all the electrics but get my mate in at the end to check it and it was fine. It helps having a good plumber and spark the rest is practice and years of it, and usually practising on your own home first. I would say 90% of builders I've met over the years are as s**t as 90% of the plasterers I've met over the years.

To be honest owls if it turns out I can't make a success of domestic work this yr I'll be more inclined to retrain to something totally different and out of the building game...

I'm sorry but I'm to old in the tooth to start doing diy for a living...its bad enough if the wife wants summet doing at home at the weekend...

If after all these yrs of graft, sweat and tears I've goto to start changing taps laying laminate floors and painting then sorry but I'm done...out of it full stop...

Hopefully rendering more may keep/get me motivated this yr if not I'll be working at asda!!!!!

Thats what I've done, I've never multi traded on the tools, but I don't have an issue with anyone that has done.

To be honest lads am fooking bemused.

When I joined this forum a fair few years ago, it was full of plasterers, site, domestics, all aspects.

All good lads that didn't always agree, but all had 1 thing in common, getting up at crack of dawn spreading shite on the walls, ceilings or floors for a wage.

Sorry to say but it's going down fookin pan, sharpish

A lot of good knowledgeable lads have left particularly out of the render section, but thats how it is I guess, but it depends how you want to use the forum, with out giving it the big un, I've never really used the forum for advice, I just try and pass on rendering info on as everyone needs a leg up sometimes. Plus I come on here to avoid the soaps that the Mrs watches.

It hasn't changed, its always been full of bullshitters pretending to be plasterers and the odd one or two who can ;) I think it comes with being in the game a very long time and I mean over 20 years and if you like to create something or are just in it for the money. I have never been in it for the money, fair enough I have to pay the bills but I've never been obsessed with money and making as much as I can and working from sun up to sun down.

Some valid points on here I'm solely a plasterer and have been for 15 years times served and can cover most aspects I've worked for firms in the last few years that get me in as a plasterer then start saying can I lay a floor can I fix skirting hang doors ect I have always said no because I feel I worked hard to be good at my job and like I said in a previous post plastering seems to of lost that it's a skilled trade edge mainly because of the "multi trades" a good builder when I started always got us in as a team to do an extension now seems that is far and few between I would like to think I'm pretty handy and ha e common sense like a lot of us on here and if pushed we could probably do other trades but I don't because I haven't got the correct tools I don't wanna buy the tools for them jobs and I'm happy just plastering,I'm with who ever said about if I rang someone to plaster my house but they was busy doing Windows I would put phone down as well, maybe I've just had that thing where I would rather pay the bit extra for someone who is in just one trade

Bullshit baffles brains though

I normally get you always on your phone as she looks up from being on Facebook with the soaps on the tv :muyenojado:

Your right mate and the reason I am not rich and obsessed with money is I can't lye, fair enough I can bullshit but only for a laugh ;)
Mate I know we started off on the wrong foot and don't get u at times but you know your stuff and that's painful to say as well lol I can't do the bullshit to a customer either I be as honest as I can and won't have anyone over because I got a conscience and wouldn't like anyone to rip me off or any of my family like some do hence when I done a bit of damp proofing for a company I didn't like the way that firm played on people's fears and got extra work at cost through pure fear the stuff of oh you don't get it done your guareentee won't be valid and on one job i see it go from 12k to 33k in a week made me feel sick so I left

I bet in that time you've seen a fair number of good plasterers drop the building game altogether?

In the last two recessions I know of quite a number of good, well qualified and experienced tradesmen who've gone to work in factories and other jobs. One bloke I see from time to time who was an excellent chippy and had done it since leaving school, left the game at 35. He works at Jag Land Rover, £36,000 a year, 7 weeks holiday, no stress, just does his job and goes home clean.

Last time I saw him was when things had started to pick up in the building game. I asked if he was going to go back to it and he said no chance. He gets his wage in good times and bad, every month regular as clockwork.

So as there are more leaving than training to come in, and those that do train aren't being trained anything like as well as they used to, the time of the single tradesman is past and fading into history IMHO.

If you after proper time served plasterers join ptg on Facebook, they even leave reviews for each other on their business page, who's a bigger chancer a multi trades person or a time served spread who is in the trade decades and can flog himself for a pack of crisp and a lager without others big him up. Sometimes people do come out with the odd s**t on here.

Here in Grimsby the job everyone wants is the off shore jobs or at the oil refinery which is a good wage. I have met lads who are freshly qualified plumbers and other blokes who are good tradesmen who would give it all up to work off shore four weeks on and two off. I couldn't think of anything worse than going to the same job doing the same thing for the rest of my life, just so my missus could have a bigger house, shinier car, bigger TV and nice holidays and miss out on seeing my kids grow up and not take them to school. Fair enough when I'm 65 I might think different but I am not wasting my life thinking about having a nice retirement that I may never get to.

I'm only 31 and been in this game from age of 15 and I had to start right at the bottom college as well and had proper abuse thrown at me but I stuck with it and I still speak to most of blokes who taught me and they said they pushed me for a reason and could see I had it in me to make a plasterer I didn't pick up a trowel for 2 years when at work cos I got told you got to learn to labour properly first carrying buckets of render up staircases knocking up in a diesel mixer on site banging houses out in a few days in a 3-1 gang then when I could it was flatten off then move onto while they was troweling up I go in a cupboard and they had lunch and I was still working at times I wanted to quit but kept going, now kids that are coming through you say one thing to them they wanna try fight you which is laughable or quit on you and I'm afraid to say some go on a course after 6 weeks think they are a plasterer and want top dollar I started on 20 a day when I was learning and me old man took 20 off me for rent haha

I too did the apprenticeship thing starting at 16, and I honestly don't think that youngsters that age now would have the patience to do a 4 or 5 year apprenticeship. :(

Still, I've no doubt the generation before us thought we were a bunch of useless impatient morons. :D

Yeah @superspread thought that of me he even sacked me but I was a knob head know it all I will admit that but I learnt 90% of the problem of it was my attitude I've sorted that and I did stick with the game so proves character
