I was on a site a couple of years ago on some new build houses. I was only there to do one. In the house next door was another fella. It took me and me mate 5 days to board dab and skim it. In those 5 days the fella next door skimmed the kitchen and f**k all else. The kitchen was 3m by 2m. He done the ceiling in 3 hits! He was on a price as well so i dont know how he affords to eat!

Id be more than happy with £200 for 2 sets on my own half day,im with rock solid on this one.
If you cant skim 45 in a hlf a day to day, then you shouldnt be dong the job.Harsh but true.
To be honest i think £150 is more the mark for a regular builder.

your changing the argument now!

We can ALL skim a ceiling that big in two hits in a day! But its the WRONG way to do things!

So I would do it with another spread in half/easy day and do it in one hit! the proper way to do things!

what do you mean by a green one?

I think he means when the plasters still semi wet/just set so when you lay the second half on it wont suck out the new skim like a spunge.

if you plaster over plaster thats a bit green you get green suction where the old plaster helps the new plaster go off a bit quicker

job im on 3.25m2 paper tape painted with silk paint snagged by shining a light across it 47m2 in small rooms 60m2 in big ones they stop 25£ a room retention you get back when you,ve snagged 3£ liabilatly and 19£ a week to do you,re money through an agency

there not allowed to shine lights at an angle they have to have lights at a set distance away shinning straight onto the wall.

45m is only 3 and a half bags piss it on my own gone for 12, wouldnt dream of doin a ceiling in two different hits if you cant, get a hand but shouldnt need a labourer aswell to knock up 3 mixes between two.

something like a 1 metre strip light 2m from the walls or the other way round ......we had murder on a job from tosser snaggers and the boss contacted british gypsum who set the tolerance if they dont agree tell em to make their own plaster and set there own tolerance

Thanks for all your comments everyone, one thing it sure points out what a massive difference in prices across the country.Expensive I maybe but I seem to have struggled through for over 35 years.

what about materials matey?

he said its for a builder so chances are the builder will get the stuff because they know that we like to make money on the materials aswell ;D

lol suppose your right there Kirk!

As its for a builder Id expect him to charge the customer about £800 and he'd pay out as little as possible, f**k**g c**ts builders!

Do people actually still make on mats? that was the firs thing i knocked off when the recession bit. aint marked em up since supply at cost

i dont mind anyone making money on me, thats just business.
aslong as you are happy with what you get then there is no problem

Why should you pass on your discount to your customers. If you had to go and get it, that all costs, doesn't it?

Definitly, but I always found builders very rarely will pay fairly, and will always go with the cheapest option, always try to get you to do more than a days work for as little as possible!

and as far as marking up materials, I dont either, I just always over estimate materials as theres nothing worse than needing to buy more out of your labour money, usually end up with an extra bit of dosh at the end of each job which is nice!

£800 to skim a 45m2 ceilings.Way of the mark mate in my opinion.
I recently did a 55m2 ceilings that was over 3 m high in a posh restaryant with about 30 lights speakers and air con unit in ceiling with my 65 year old father in half a day.I charged £550 or £10 m2.
I only charged this much becuse parking was an issue and i had to hire in scaffold.

This is the second time in a month I'm going to agree with you Kirk

i always round up materials to the nearest £10 for each item so i make on an average room anywhere from £10-£60 on the mats and then if you want to look good i just say listen the materials didnt cost that much because i8 had some left over from my last job so i will knock off £10 or £20 and they will be over the moon and am still £20 odd up on the materials. always make the customer think you are bending over backwards to try and help them! they love it ;)

that used to be the whole point of opening an account at a builders merchants, you stay loyal, they give you discount, you make more money...
now the wholesale of building materials has got so competitive with companies such as b&q and wickes undercutting the main general builders merchants its hard to find discounts of any note unless your using a specialist plastering suppliers...

either that or quant up your materials with a bit over then youve always got some of everything in the shed for those little 1 ceiling/patching jobs ..
being as plaster has a short shelf life its not sensible to go too over the top, specially at the minute but ive always got a bit of everything and i just rotate the 'stock' as it were...
