i fully agree with you pal,
but i cant see it changing any time soon and rates going up to be honest.the days of making top money in the skimming game is over.
 
Alright then owls , were is the bottom line to prices £1-50 £1-10 m2 because if they can shag you for that price they will mate. To many chasing to little work, there is your problem .
 
youve just backed up my point of supply and demand, ie to many chasing the work

i would think it will stay about were it is now to be honest,but i ant got a crystal ball.
one time i could sub work out at 3 quid a metre for skimming, float and set at 7 and make a good living,cant do it no more.
theres to many skimmers about two a penny.this day and age you have to have more strings to your bow.

that is why i havnt been near a site in over 2 years,and undertake differnt projects now adays

thing is,you finish skimming a house on site thesedays and the painter comes in to misscoat as you are coming out and he tells you he is getting same money to paint it as you got to skim it!! I know I would rather paint one than skim one!! The working man has always been his own worst enemy,theres always someone that will do it cheaper.If everyone said x amount and no lower they would have to pay it but that will never happen.
 
my labourer left a few months back as we was running out of work to keep him goin and it was pushing up the prices that no one wanted to pay, spoke to him the other day and hes fallen right on his feet in a month he trained to be a PAT tester got a job and now has a projected earning of 30,000+ a year, not bad considdering couple a months before he was labouring........... git haha
 
anyone got any idea just exactly what 'pat' testing double insulated gear and transformers actually entails? ever seen the spark actually pat test your gear? f'ck me, i could do that meself!!!!!!
 
It's to stop fecking plasterers with dodey leads ,cracked plug sockets ,drills what shoot out blue sparks when pressing the trigger and sticking in a bucket of water. If only it could stop all of the above, not a chance.
 
exactly, cracked sockets, dodgy leads... visual inspection and an earth test... you could do the same thing with one eye and an rcd equipped ring main...
f'ckin pat testers about 300 quid...
the machine that is... theyll prolly use about a hundredth of its capacity and charge tw@ts like us 100 quid to tell us we need to cut 2" off the 240 lead and wire it back in cos its a bit frayed... or just 100 quid to tell you its f'ckin fine...
 
i know he ran me through a few things that he has to do and to be honest the hardest part of the job was the driveing, which lets be honest here we already do alot of driving in our game specialy at the moment when you have to travel to where the work is.
 
yeah. i wish it was down to following them. unfortunately its due to working all over the ******* place at the minute, still, its work

Did a nice little job of my own today,started at 9am finished at 1. took me time,no rushing around like a lunatic,nobody chewing me head off abt PPE.An absolute joy to be a spread if I could have jobs like that everyday! And no 50 mile commute,it was 2 mins away so no fuel costs! If only everyday could be like today! So nice to do a stairwell off a ladder and plank too!
 
Yep pug and rockhard,you can never find enough to keep you offsite! And when ur on site,u lose touch with prices! Plus your onsite and u become invisible! Nobody knows you exist cos ur not out there making contacts and then the sitework dries up and your screwed!
 
I've been quite lucky during the downturn but i can turn my hand to other things and i got low overheads (my missus is cheap to run!) so i can ride it out.
 
like i say ive made up a sign "plasterer for hire" amd park my van at the entrance rd to b+q and lean sign on side of van.take a flask a good book and a radio and just wait and see.i got a job yesterday only a days work bur still work and have been approached everyday now about future work.its horrible but if 2 people get a card every day your there hopefully it wont take long to get some work coming in and who knows in a years time you might have a decent round.ive tried every thing else and at least i know that today 2 potential customers approached me.
 
If you can pick work up on the domestic longlegs you will be better off and more happy then busting your balls on 3 hits a day on site with all the shite what goes with it.
 
Best of luck Rock! Its a good idea me thinks! I advertised with Yell last year,I had to keep picking up my phone to make sure it was still conected! Yep! that bad! In that year I got abt 3 jobs and ok one job paid 4 the add but I expected my phone to be red hot! Its tough out there! But we will get thru it!
 
Yep Henry,Ive hated the job lately but today proved that its not the job I hate,its having the piss taken out of me I hate. Busting ur balls for shite price then gettin shafted at the petrol pump etc makes you forget the nice side of the job!
 
rockhard- a mate of mine did an afternoon dropping leaflets through doors before xmas and has had a months worth of work from it, given me a weeks worth too! i've never reckoned much of leaflets but its paid off for him.
