Prob best way to sort it Alf, skirting board off the floor level to the meeting a another vertical one breaking that joint. Boarding over it all would result it a false string needed. Ripping it out would probably result it finding it’s why the way it’s like that in the first place.

Or just run the skirt to the tread and forget the arc. Arcs look good on top of the string just depends on what period the house is and if it matches the other staircase. Presuming this is your loft stairs.

He’s bought the house next door I reckon, he’s filled it just had to knock a few bricks out at top of the house to ram some more in then screwed that mdf on pissed thought i’ll Sort it in the morning and here we are.

Can see the string just below the tread where your drill is. Looks thick enough to take some 9mm board without over shooting the string.
Will that square bit of mdf come off...looks screwed on. Might be able to cut it to match string line like Vauxhall said and pack it off flush to the surface of the string.
