So who uses base coats with modern renders like mono ? And why ?

Yes sometime use say Rend-aid(Weber) if the blocks/bricks are in poor condition or have mixed suction background and then you can place the mesh into that coat ,key up, done ready for mono.

We're currently using wetherby high polymer dash receiver. It's the bees knees, can spread a s**t load before you need to dash it. Hangs all day long

Is that applied over insulation board ?

Definitely have to try it some time , only done two EWI jobs, one was was she'd at the bottom of the garden ,the other one was a 15m square job over eps ,1.5m silicone silicate finish so I'm still a complete novice , but that 15m job was for £1600 supply and fit so very worthwhile and too smalll for the full time Ewi people , just gave away a 95 m job that had kingspan and krend on top ,thought I'd probably fuk it up

Maybe best avoided kingspan kooltherm is horrible stuff to use.

Phenolic boards are getting bad press on their lifespan when used with a renders on top not sure as to technical data why, just that systems are failing!

There a pain when they get wet, there also very expensive compared to eps insulation but you can get thinner and achieve a better u value, you pays your money yountakes your choice.

Phenolic boards are good in the right hands. To the op- basecoat reduces the chance of slumping and controls the suction.

They absorb water like a sponge. Prefer using eps
