Definitely something we should all know about, we used to bury tonnes of it in old basements, oddly felt like we were just been a bit naughty back then,

I would go with the classroom, I did mine about 2 years ago. All done in a few hrs
instant answers to questions and samples to look at, usually with a slide show presentation.

Care to give us a couple of pointers Brian? I did a COSHH (control of substances hazardous to Health) many years ago but was more chemical/toxins. Any tips on identifying Asbestos?

Olican, just 2 points,
if it looks like it has small fibres in it, it's a possibility.

If you suspect, get it checked and tested as that's the only definite way of knowing.

Theres 3 type of Asbestos, Blue, (dangerous) Brown ( less dangerous) White ( least dangerous )

If in doubt or suspect, leave it alone and get it checked and tested

havent encountered much asbestos for a long time. many years ago a bulider got my mate to scim over an asbestos ceiling, trying to save the money on removing it.

Asbestos is in all the art ex ceilings pre mid eighties, in all the synthaproof on the floors too, scary where it is but mostly the mild low percentage stuff.fortune to be made from removing it safely and legally though

John do you know where the worst place for it is?

London Underground

Know what you mean John
Its a licence to print money removing it

I did a class room 1 last year. Like everything else health and safety based its just covering yourself so you can't be sued.

i.e You go to price over skim artex ceiling. Ask Mrs Smith how long ago was it artexed, She tells you as long as she can remember. You then have to tell her she needs a sample taken and tested at a cost to her around £250 for a specialist.

She will just laugh at you and get someone else in.

Even over-boarding a artex ceiling is illegal.

We were asked to pva and bond it by the asbestos people last year over artex ceilings, I said it will not work and the artex will peel, they said it won't, it did peel so we ended up scraping it off, its very low level especially when wet. I hope....

I don't follow the colours from Brian s above ,white sheets of asbestos are very dangerous, is the colours a grade only, I take it the must be..artisan, help me here.

Given the number of ceiling we all must have either dropped or at least scraped back its a wonder we are still here at all.

I thought you could get test kits online for about £40 which you send away to be tested??

If you are removing artex completely use a steam stripper and take if off slowly it is harmless when it is wet i always wear a mask anyway but it's when u start making dust that it starts getting dangerous!

Even if the artex ceiling has got asbestos (Chrysotile White) in it's only a low amount like 3 to 5% as long as you sheet up properly keep spraying a mist of water, wear a suit and proper mask you can remove it safely. Your body can get rid of small amounts anyway, and your only supposed to work with it for a certain amount of time. You would have to be exposed to the stuff everyday, all day for it to do damage.

I bet you there's quite a few people on here thats been plastering for over 30 years and have worked with loads of artexed ceilings and are ok.
