    re skim small area

A small area (about a quarter bag) was skimmed (2 coats onto board) - 3 days ago, the finish isn't great, bit bumpy etc, not bad for his first attempt. I'd like to re skim it, but have a feeling the existing plaster (not painted) will suck the water out of the new plaster instantly. Whats the...

    what to do here.. pics

Hi all, hope you can help here... A good friend of mine is renovating his bathroom, he has stripped the tiles off (adhesive will also be scraped off) the wall, ideally it needs to be plastered then painted.. I've done a fair bit of boarding now, and plastering at my house but it's always been...

    Tile cutter advice

Ignore him mate he is a child who needs attention, if he doesn't get it he will have a tantrum and eventually go away. I read somewhere that the ts60 struggles with porcelain tiles, any truth in that? can't see me doing owt bigger than the ones I just did, 6x3 porc.. so something that makes a...

    Tile cutter advice

Thanks, makes sense. The deal feel through so I'm still looking, the tiles I just laid were 3x6 porcalin and i wasted many with bad cuts with a crappy big clanger cutter.. I'm drawn toward the tx 700 now incase I choose the same tiles for the kitchen and dina... I see the tx 700 would be ideal...

    Tile cutter advice

Looking into a Rubi cutter, have been offered some at a good price but have a few questions.. Aside from the obvious, what's the reason for the different cutters.. for example a ts 40 and a ts 60, why would you need the 40 if you have the 60? I've also seen a tx700 cutter, would this cover...

uneven landing ceiling / over board / over joist

Hi all, having some issues with over boarding the landing ceiling.. seems they are all off a bit so tried packing as I went along but it's getting messy now.. will probably just start over.. I watched a video about screwing new joists into the existing ones, over the old plasterboard then...

    joints

Luckily I don't do this for work lol. Couldn't the customer argue that the skim is too thin though? either way, if I was doing it for a living and knew what you guys knew.. I'd just do 2 quotes, 1 normal one and 1 with extra to sort the poor dry walling job.. as I'm guessing you could tell...

    joints

thanks all, so you just run a bit of skim down the scrim with your trowel? (seen a video he was using another tool) With your corner beads, do you nail them and then a bit of skim or just a bit of skim to hold them? seems pointless nailing it into board as it doesnt really hold
  18. W

    joints

After scrimming joints on sq edge board, do you put a run of skim or jointing mix over them ? if so.. why? Or do you just scrim up then skim the wall?

    slight play in plasterboard join

I only do this for myself mate not as a job.. but cheers
  20. W

    slight play in plasterboard join

Cheers, will 100% add the nogin in. It's only very very slight as I think stevie wonder set the joists out on this wall, but as you said best to do it before plastering
  21. W

    slight play in plasterboard join

It's hard to explain, it's not like a full on flimsy board.. it's maybe a few mm when you press hard in a certain area. At the time I thought the other joists would provide enough support, and they actually might but having checked it now I have doubt, hence the thread and hence me sticking a...

    slight play in plasterboard join

I boarded an oddly laid out stud wall, having finished this I noticed in some parts where the boards join, there is a bit of play when pressed as there is no joist behind that part.. it's only slight Will skimming the wall strengthen it or should I take the boards off and add a joist in there...

    First attempt

OP, it's a difficult one (I'm also a DIY have a go'er) the problem is you can't upload pictures of your first go and not expect a bit of abuse.. these guys do this for a living and are pro's .. plus people who work in trades generally are more manly/bantery (that a word?) than office workers, so...

What would you do here? PICS

Just stripping the wallpaper off before re-boarding the ceiling and plastering the whole room.. having removed the wallpaper on the window wall, I noticed a few problems. It looks like it's been skimmed over the original plaster at some point, and that layer is coming off, see pic. Also, there...

Which board for bathroom to be tiled? skim?

Cassie the tiles are approx 25kg per pack and 1 pack is pretty much 1mq so should be OK then? Yup, no shower.. we are fitting one of those taps on the new bath which has a shower head thing but not an actual shower. So with this scenario in mind, you think just reboard entire room with MR...

Which board for bathroom to be tiled? skim?

thanks guys, much appreciated. As there won't be a shower, aqua panel around bath area then mr boards.. then tank all boards or? and no plastering just tile onto them.. The tiles are heavy, is it worth chucking a few extra studs in while the rooms stripped bare? Many thanks again
  33. W

cement boards, are they those aqua ones? tank them also? thanks

Which board for bathroom to be tiled? skim?

Apologises if this is classed ash more of a tiling question, but I'd imagine alot of you guys board up before a tiler comes in so with that in mind I'm about to start on the bathroom, plan is to rip it all out (bath, toilet and sink) then take the plasterboard walls down as they old and...

I'm going to be over boarding a landing and some rooms - I'd like to get recessed spot lights installed, I assume you guys would have had to do this at some point My question is, what is your method? over board, drill the holes for the spots them skim? Also, how much do you space them by etc...

    Frustrated - help - *pics*

thanks for all the advice and replies So, what is going to be the best way to avoid the joins bumping out again? just lay it on thicker? or put some plaster or joint filler along the scrim before plastering the wall? as I've already boarded up the landing and don't want it to happen again
  37. W

    Frustrated - help - *pics*

Yeah, the problem is timing when you're learning makes no sense as you have to wait between coats etc etc but due to being a novice and being so slow, there is no time to wait. I learn by doing as I think it's the best way, but there is so much to learn :RpS_laugh: full respect to the people who...

Interesting you mention the tapered edge board as I started off buying them on accident, then I switched to straight edge as I thought that was best for plastering. Although now I'm thinking the opposite :RpS_lol: Although, used the same boards on the ceiling and didn't have that problem

    Frustrated - help - *pics*

I am pretty sure that's what I'm doing wrong, or laying it on thick then flattening too soon and taking it all back off. Will work on it, thanks guys. Also, I just scrim and go I don't put any over the scrim prior to plastering, should I ?

Thanks guys, yeah it did leak years ago come to think of it.. if going down the pulling down route, how exactly would you sort the timbers? plane them down or actually change them? thanks
  46. W

    re-board droopy ceiling

On the stairs end of the landing the ceiling droops down a bit, I'm going to be over-boarding and plastering it, basicallly it's where the huge heavy water tank was in the loft before we had a combi fitted recently.. so I think the weight of it has caused it to droop a bit, the tank is now gone...
