Tape jointing

Any lads on here with a plastering background who also tape joint properly?
Thinking of getting into it is it worth it what’s the pros and cons thanks

Tape jointing is the job that I detest the most in plastering. I have not seen anyone apply the sealer over tape jointing for years. I do think that it will be the future on new builds as they try to find something cheaper then plastering. Tony the member from Devon would be more helpful.

90% of new build apartments in Manchester are spray plastered now that's the way forward

I've done a fair bit mate. You need a fair few tools to make it quick and pay and the sanding is laborious.

I have seen the Knauf M75 spray plaster. I'm surprised that the Tarmac self finishing plaster has not caught on in UK. It is all over Scandinavia.

Yes mate, used to do a bit of it, its good for attic conversions. I still do it on patch up jobs quite frequently. Forget the ready mixed rubbish though... you want Quick Sand ..used to be called Joint Cement... you can actually give it three coats, dry each time, then sponge it to a good finish if you know what your doing...or can be arsed... as its water soluble. Never done it with the guns....always see that way as piss thin and it never lasts.
New build pishy stuff really !
The sanding will break your soul though !!!!!

The skilled labour is out there but you are not going to find it on site paying peanuts.
Unfortunately it’s not, very few younger ones coming into construction, not just plastering, and an aging workforce. These are facts taken from official sources and it’s causing more than a little concern.

They've got more sense than to knacker their bodies doing a physical job for site peanuts. Arguably they also lack the discipline, are work shy, want a nice warm dry office, and want more than basic wages, even if they are not worth it (yet).

It will takes years to recover from the influx of skilled labour from Europe. They were dark times for construction. We have to invest in our own.

The trade is not what is was. If you work on domestic you need to be multi skilled now.

Have you got anyone who can teach you? If you are only doing the odd job and up to 2-3 rooms you may as well just hand tape, it’s not worth getting the machines out. If you are serious about site work then you’ll need to get the machines.

This is because of to much red tape for a one man band to take on apprentices Gary, materials up by 50% since COVID, minimum wages up the same. Yet vat threshold only up by 6%. Don’t know if anyone else agrees with this.

I would never serve another apprenticeship in plastering. A total waste of time they have no protection what so ever in this trade. It will just become a semi skill as it is in Europe.
Wages are too low you need to earn a take home pay of £1600 per week to be able to purchase a house in south east England. If you can not purchase your own home what is the point in helping to build other peoples homes?

I don't know about the !600/week but I found myself in the same position in the late 1970's and decided to get out, never regretted it.

Jeez, that tape gear's expensive! How long are you going to have to work for to pay that off? I've watched the you tubes of the Aussie tapers and the speed at which they work. Team work, including sanding, and practically running, in cleared clean rooms!

Yep and to earn that kind of money you have to spend 20 years building up your experience/tools/contacts and by then your body is knackered and you are ready to die trowel in hand!

I take home on average 300 - 350 a day and it still doesn't feel like enough. Most of my jobs are complex and require many tools, multi skills and project management a right headache.

I agree malc it’s all gone to s**t labourers are earning 150 a day sweeping floors
Meanwhile we could be busting balls for 300 a day but what’s left after paying a labourer and if you do get to train them up they jump on the skiming bandwagon which is fair enough
The incentive both sides is completely out the window

That’s the plan mate when we finish our job theres a big warehouse to be done which could be a couple of months I said to our boss get a taper pay us daywork let him teach us and when we’re up to speed he can take what’s over our daywork
Hopefully it can work both ways I won’t let him take the piss and we wouldn’t either

Can you still make a living only skimming? I probably get 2 jobs a year skimming on domestics.

he’s been hit in the ass by bad tapers and I do a lot of work for him and he trusts me Obviously theres too much work on etc so I’m not gonna be a one man band tape jointer plasterer
The one big worry is the cost from what I know and the lads I’m chatting to a lot still hand apply and only get machines out for really big jobs but even a sanders 2k and a full set up is 7k so deffo food for thought but if I stick it out it’s another thing Essex andy can’t do and I can rub it in his face aye :burlas:

Mate it’s virtually impossible to take on apprentice if you’re a sole trader. Even if you sub the financial aspect just doesn’t make sense

You used to be able to lease/hire the machines.
Still not cheap, but might be an option as a trial run.

Years ago college used to find you a job, now it’s left to the no hopers that want to stay in their bedroom all day till they have the same complexion as a steak and kidney pudding.
