Slurry for old blown bricks

Hi,

I have a rendering job to do on 1850s house. Some of the bricks are blown. what slurry mix would I use? Considering the old cement render cracked, I’m thinking of using a 5/1/1cement, sand, lime render.

I'd try and dodge cement as much as possible mate.

Check out Mike Wye, on that site they have proper lime Harling slurries etc

I've used a few bagged lime renders mate, they behave way nicer than the old fashioned stuff I used years ago.

need to match the mortar between the bricks, if that's lime, need to use lime.

bricks look like they need repointing before you do anything.

you can hire a small machine that will squirt the mortar right between the bricks.

Thanks for the reply, I took the render off and now have quite a large gap between the two buildings The person before filled the gap with tile and cement and then rendered over it.‍‍

Cheers bud, save me some time that.

What is the valley like up there or is there not one?
I was taught need 1” in 6’ fall minimum and you need to have em wide enough to get up there and sweep em clean! Is that partly why the render has failed

Has tie bars in the property, think it’s historic movement.

the valley is around 18inches and did have a leak at one point until I fixed it. My guess is that the render mix was to strong. In the gaps between the two buildings I found old tiles. Looks like the gap has been there a long time and they just rendered over it.

Alright bud, thanks for the reply. I’m going to repoint the bricks with 5/1/1 mortar, should I use sbr before hand/after? Not sure how it reacts with lime. Thanks in advance

Alright bud, it’s pretty good but we did have a leak through the lead, All fixed now and it’s around 18inches wide.
