On this site I see so many people bragging at every opportunity they get about how much they can lay on.
Doing this brings the price of plastering down because there is too much expectation on what a plasterer can lay on.
It’s an art and not a race, it’s meant to be a way of earning a living.

Well said @luke105. Plasterers are the worst trade for this. A race to the bottom to out skim each other

I have said it before ...... skimming is all that most so called plasterers can do which is why they put so much focus on it .
This is a slight bugbear to me, I don’t do render, I’ve never screeded anything. I can float internal, skim, board and I recently started making ceiling roses. Is my worth less? If anyone would have felt inclined to take me on and teach me everything they knew then maybe I would be doing more. But they didn’t. What I can do I think I do well. And I work hard. Does anyone really care about what I can and can’t do?

Just what are you trying to say Jess ?

Why does a topic on here last about 5 replies until people start talking a lot of sht or hijacking the thread

I’m saying am I not a plasterer because I don’t do everything that the trade should traditionally encompass? Do you or others think less of me because of it? Judgey!

I don’t. I know spreads who think they’re gods gifts cause can f&s. so let them do it saves me doing it lol.

do modern day joiners make dove-tail joints? Do they make their own doors?
Do electricians repair light fittings? Do plumbers lead-wipe joints?
No, times move on trades get easier, the modern plasterer boards and skims that’s it. Rendering has become its own specialist trade with the rise of thin coat silicone based
Get over it

No. if you you can float internal and stick boards and skim to a good standard then you can call yourself a plasterer . all else is just handy skills to have . Floors and render are now there own trades and not a requirement to have anymore but there are plenty out there who got let lose on some skimming and now spend all there days smashing out the Meters and polishing it to death in an attempt to make themselves look skillful .They are what we used to call Thistle pigs ....all fighting like pigs in a trough to get to the finish on the spot board .IMO.:coffe:

@Andy g has been banging this drum for a long time, but the bullies just take the piss out of him.

to survive the recessions that this country falls into i have found you need to be able to render, ewi, floor screed, tack and skim just to keep your self in work.
Touch wood I’ve so far always been ok. If I’m quiet there’s people I can ring but I tend to have a steady stream of work. I think being female helps if I’m honest, it’s a niche for the foreseeable

It does always make me laugh this Billy big b*ll***s shite about how much people can lay on, there are heroes on here like Algee but it's rare to be the quick, efficient and good.. I generally plod along and do as little as I can get away with for as much money as possible like Nisus says. It's rare for me to do anything other than a small room a day (and I mean small) and if I do decide to work my arse off I charge a lot of wedge for doing so, as it's not enjoyable, I like to enjoy work, not dread it!
