patching a ceiling

got a artex ceiling to patch its like wave effects about 2-3 mil deep its just a small patch about 6inc sq how do i make the wave efffect? i knoe to use a sponge to make the drop effect thanks the boys!!!!

elo i aint sure what sort of pattern it is if its a combed pattern whole ceiling have to be done.if by wave you mean broken leather could be repaired using sponge covered with plastic bread bag [white medium sliced works best]
