Overboarding a coved ceiling.

I know someone mentioned a way to do this before...where you need to keep original coving, ceiling can be overboarded then an edge bead fixed to the boards...

are these the ones?

and how far do you set the boards back from the coving or is it just whatever pleases the eye?

thats just a normal stop bead bubbles. if you use the architrave bead it gives a nice border all the way round
 
Just giving him options for different prices steve. Them architrave beads look the business though, I wouldn't mind trying them out :RpS_thumbup:
 
they do look quite nice. we did a whole barn conversion with them, it was for a couple who were both architects so i supose they saw it as modern poncey stuff. they had no architrave, no skirting, it was all architrave beads. even had it round the windows.
 
no mate, this was back in 2005, didnt think to take pics then. they also had a big open hallway from the floor to the ceiling and on the second floor 2 RSJS going diagonally from 1 room 2 the other, then on the RSJs they put glass partitions and glass floor. left all the RSJS showing and didnt even paint them, left them red
 
LOL......... wish I'd taken more piccies now - never even thought of a website until recently! Did they paint them RSJs with fireproof paint or did they just sign the job off themselves? :RpS_wink:
 
they were finished with red oxide. one of the lads said they'd seen it on grand designs and copied the idea
 
Cheers Beddy so how exactly does that work m8? do you cut your boards short say 20mm of the existing coving, then butt bead upto coving? and from the picture it looks like the bead has a rebate do you fill that with plaster?

I guess you could stick the bead up first and work to it?

no you leave the rebate empty, thats the whole point of the bead. ive seen people fix them to the board before they put the board up, i've seen people leave a gap all the way round then put the bead in after, ive even seen people gripfill the bead on first then slot the board under the wing
 
its not designed to do that, but its a way around it. personally i wouldnt overboard a coved ceiling, either skim it as it is or take the coving down and recove it.
 
With whatever you use the boards are going to look proud of the coving...if you take the coving down I guess you could just pack those areas out and overboard. i'm trying to avoid taking the whole ceiling down!
 
why? is it lath and plaster? why so desparate to overboard anyway? cant you just skim it? cant you just hack the coving off and recove it? who gives a sh't what it looks like if you overboard it and leave the coving up, if they wont pay proper money what the f'ck do they expect?

True m8. Its a papered l&p ceiling so not sure whats underneath, I said to the customer if the ceilings in a bad way may have to overboard/take down ceiling. Just wanted to know what the cheapest option is so I don't price myself out. You sound angry Chris?
 
it can be a nice feature leaving say a 100 -150 mm gapbetween the cove and new board as long as its in decent nick .when decorating it can be done differently and look nice.using these edge beads allows you to use yourimmagination and make feature boarders or bands it can be a good thing

no mate, but if its a customer who wants a proper job but doesnt want to pay a proper price i tend not to bother myself with fine details, switch off the helpful conscientiousness and bang it out for beer money (otherwise known as cash)
if its a proper job for a proper customer i wouldnt give em cheap options, just options... adding decor features to make it look fantastic is gonna take longer than skimming it....
in other words, if your happy to do more work than normal for less money than normal then go for it, if not, and they dont want the ceiling down or wont pay for recoving - f'ck em, board it and caulk the edges...
cheapest option is just paint the ceiling.... :RpS_blink:
 
B and q stock the edging beads which are just a stop bead with a lip on that slides around the back of the board im thinking them architrave bead wudnt always be the best the cove may be slightly bent etc and it wudnt butt right up ? I normally board using packers up to cove then fit the bead or board up to the cove measure off once there all up say 20mm then chalk line them up there and cut off , makes it all nice and straight :RpS_thumbsup:
