Whats a good business name? I was gonna call it 'DLT Plastering & Building' but now I'm thinking it might be to long :(

Any suggestions?, what you guys called.

1 school of thought says just use your own name, instills customer confidence etc, easy to remember....
another one says whatever you do DONT use your own name cos if you end up going pop for whatever reason its your name that gets dragged through the mud..
microsoft aint called 'gates software'....virgin aint 'the richard branson group'...
my advert starts with the word 'Plastering'...thats it...
my business cards have my name on em though cos its hard to give people a card without tellin em my name...
good advice might be stick the letters 'Ltd' on the end of it....specially in the current economic climate... ;)
nothing to stop you addin other stuff to your advert/cards/van lettering though....there can be a lot of 'associated' work involved with a plastering job like second fix joinery, tiling, plumbing, bathrooms, kitchens even fixing the cause of many a dropped ceiling - a leaky roof  :D
i also think the word 'specialist(s)' carries a hell of a lot of weight in a customers thought process...

problem with my name is there's another bloke in the same town whos a right deadbeat baghead who's always in the paper. people might be put of by the name.

DLT was also the "hairy cornflake"  ;) papers usually charge by the number of words

i think, if its word of mouth, then its your name not the 'company' name that gets passed around, and then its on recomendation so you wont have to worry about jack the lad...
if its down to pulling new customers i think the 'company name' is pretty much irrelevant, its how your advert comes across that matters...ive been told this by my customers...
you could call yourself 'Hi Q Plastering' or 'High Quality Plastering Specialists' but its what follows that matters...
use impact phrases (a buzz word i just made up) like 'clean', 'fast', 'efficient', 'freindly', 'competive', 'affordable', 'result' cos its what the customers want to hear...given a choice between an ad that says 'super dooper a1 mechanics' and one that says 'dick spanner, experienced mechanic, competitive rates, freindly local service' im goin with dick every time...

just seen wot the censorship things done... good job no ones called d1ck innit :D

some do charge by wordage, others dont, mine doesnt, i got the price off em, then gave em an a4 sheet how i wanted it worded...got no arguments...well, maybe off a plumber who moaned cos my advert is 3 times the size of his cos he didnt realise... ;D
the way i do my advertising is to try and put myself in the customers shoes and pitch to what i'd want to see...

i hope to god you havent spelt tiling like 'tileing' on your van oasis :D

reminds me of a 'company' round here ive seen a couple of times...called 'bloke and bird builders'...straight up...
seen two blokes in the van though...dunno which ones the 'bird' ;D

luckly spelling is not needed for plastering..

there is a van round here called inexpensive roofing comany.

just this for me, cant really fit much on my small van tho, just the jobs for me at the moment as im just starting out and dont advertise anywhere else, just want to look more professional when i pull up at someones house. ill probably wait till i finishe college next year before advertising and doing it for a living, seemt o get a few jobs from word of mouth tho which is keeping me afloat aswell as my part time job

"D. Andrews"
"PLASTERING AND TILING"
"Tel: 012345678 Mob: 012345678"

So D.Andrews whats your first name? IMO use your full name e.g David Andrews Plastering makes life alot easier so people know who to write checks to...also if customers forget your name...when customers phone up wanting to call you by your first name...leaving it as initials puts people off calling...full name good for invoices building merchants etc remember you too many reaons m8 i could go on for ever...millions of d.andrews out there you never build a reputation for yourself.

And guys don't take bigsegs seriously when he says put ltd after you name your get into serious trouble!

lol!! what i meant was set up a limited company!! NOT masquerade AS a limited company...
yer mans right...big big trouble if you do that...
being a limited company 'limits' any liability to the company and NOT to you...so if you do go bust its the company thats made bankrupt (liquidated) not you!!

dont u pay 22% tax with a limited company, also why would u get in to trouble for putting ltd after your name

fraud innit...when you set up a limited company you have to register with companies house, they then check to see no-one else is using the name you wish to register...
lets just say i didnt bother to register and called myself 'british gypsum limited'...chances are i'd get swamped with work....then i'd get jumped on from an almighty height by b.g. lawyers for 'piggybacking'...i.e. fraudulently using their name to promote me own business... business fraud is seriously frowned upon and carries some serious bird...
as for the tax..cant remember, i was part of a limited company at the start of the year but backed out...i did the neck down bit...

that said, in certain circumstances, if your name is the same as one already in use you can get away with tagging your area on the end...e.g. 'pristine plastering ltd' (no offence mate, just an example) would become 'pristine plastering (east midlands) ltd'..
dunno how i'd get on calling myself 'british gypsum (east mids) ltd' though.. ;D the accountant can fill you in on the details...

interesting point, i may well be inclined to use my full name as i have nothing to hide, im not a cowboy and i dont intend to cut corners thus creating a bad name for myself so maybe one day when i get biger van and canutilise the space apropriately and actually go self employed full time It's certainly soemthing to think about

hi guys, i work under the name A.G.S. Plastering Northwest ltd , like bigsegs says u gotta register name with companies house and check availability of the name u thinking of using , thats why i had to have northwest on the end . oasis do u live in urmston area in manchester ? sure ive seen your van with dot and dab lettered on it .
