Got a little job with a bowed artex ceiling. Leaked in so it has to come down. Customer isn’t sure on date it was done but the house was built in the 70’s.
Has anyone had an asbestos test done? Is it expensive and was it a ballache or quick and easy?

Salutations
Me

It's never bothered me , was taking down and scraping artex since I was a lad and before I new of any danger , if I was starting over I think I would steam it off then rip the rest down

Someone told me it cost around £300 to get tested then a lot more to get rid of if there’s asbestos in it.

I heard asbestosis was a hoax

Could you not mf it underneath mate got the room cheap as fuk mf

on insurance work you must have an asbestos test on Artex type of ceilings. the test is done by post and is not expensive. but if asbestos is found then it has to be removed by an asbestos contractor.
Didn’t realise that. Was going to do the test then remove myself with all the PPE etc.

Suppose this is how these companies make money. Scare the f**k out of the customer with horror stories then add a few 000’s to the cost.

Just board over the t**t lifes too short, will cost him about £2k plus to rid that artex ceiling by a asbestos contractor they charge heaps..how much is it bowing down?

the insurance company nor the structural engineer who hands out this type of work want any come backs in the future.

Know way can any1 get rid of asbestos without a licence, every tom dick and Harry would be on it,gypos,Romanians the lot, needs to be removed then disposed of properly imagine gypos just fly tipping it everywhere with there tarmac

Assuming the test comes back positive
If it's not a big room how about a suspended ceiling , assuming you have the height and no foot traffic above

On a job with a professional asbestos removal company due to artex. Place looked like a scene from ET with all the sheeting. Workers didn’t wear any masks and smoked while they ‘removed it’. They weren’t bothered as apparently it was so low risk.

local tip in Ipswich will only take asbestos on 1 day per week. it is buried deep and the area is marked for future generations.

£120 for the last test we had on an external panel. white asbestos isn’t as bad as blue or brown but one fibre can
Still be critical it can sit dorment for years in your lungs.
I used to treat asbestos as a bit of a faff and an over reaction, fuss about nothing sort of thing ...until my dad got diagnosed with asbestosis at 61, hes now 64 and it’s got worse and worse he’s on a death run and it will kill him in the next 2-4 years, it’s heartbreaking. he used to rip old downpipes etc down on the externals. My advice to any fella, do it by the book and never scrape any ceilings down, it was everywhere until the late 80s early 90s.

Sorry to hear that rich. Make the most of your time mate.

Ceilings, soffits, gutters, boilers, sheds, roofing panels, all sorts of cladding etc etc. For my chas I have to do a touch screen test on it every 2 years, a real eye opener. It’s a modern day scandal. The rates of old school trades getting diagnosed is escalating every year, and it will do for at least the next 10 years until it levels off. My old man was a joiner/ roofer and his lungs are full of it, gut retching my young kids will never know there grandad just because he was doing his job in the 1980s.

I once smashed up an old garage when I was 20 it was asbestos
We didn’t wear masks or anthing, I’ve woken up in a cold sweat on a number of occasions thinking about it.

It’s truly awful, one day your fit, months down the line you get short of breath etc a year you can’t even walk up stairs, it’s pretty much incurable.

We found a patch of asbestos buried in the sub-floor of a garage conversion at the job we're on last week. Once we'd exposed enough to see it wasn't just a couple of bits I didn't give the customer a choice. Phoned an asbestos removal company, they had a look, £1700 plus vat to remove 20 bags in a day.

It's low risk white asbestos cement board type panels broken up. The damp in the ground keeps the dust down.

It's expensive, but it's not a problem I've created so it's not my problem how much it costs to remove.

That's why they buried it. Bet the customer was pissed! however, if it was the previous owners they might, just might, be able to recover that on their insurance or any purchase indemnity insurance. E.G if the garage didn't have planning approval then normally you'd get indemnity insurance - since it was part of a fault in that build it's covered.
