Are the old ways better?

I used to think the same, but my opinion has changed.
My son and I have worked together for about thirteen years now and the only two houses we've been asked to float and set were right in the very early days, so he has never had the chance to learn how to float.
He can however, board to an extremely high standard, float and set a stair winder, obviously skim, apply and finish thincoat render and sand and cement render, including applying a standard pargetting finish with bands.
Does that not make him a plasterer, just because he's never had the opportunity to learn one aspect of the trade?
My old man used to say that you weren't a proper plasterer unless you could floor screed, how many plasterers can screed nowadays?
Times change and even us old farts need to try and change with it a bit.
All just my honest opinion.
Sounds like another bengal:inocente:

I do agree my point was there is loads of lads who can only skim no way no how are they plasterers ,I do agree times are moving forward and and the likes of k rend and thin coats are more the norm now ,not saying the old ways were better I remember mixing browning with a shovel and rake ,and board finish with a plunger as we called it ,and it depends to geographically where you are I’m in Ireland we use S&C a lot more over here both inside and out .now I’m lucky I have my 2 sons working with me they came on 2 years ago in that time they have used S&C K rend wet and dry dash ,base mesh and colour coats ,ok they are only learning but know exactly what all of it is ,they can board and skim with confidence, as I said it does depend on your area and what u specialise in we do all new builds .pumps speed skims flexible trowels any thing that makes life easy has to be better ,but I don’t think we should lose the old ways . I suppose part of my point was is that the trade is getting broken up into different sections is that a good thing I don’t know ,

Over here the trade has been split up for many decades on new build work. My old man had barely ever tacked anything his entire career, and neither had I until about fifteen years ago, it was just done by full-time tackers.
Very few spreads my age (60) have screed on proper sites. Mostly done by full-time screeders.
Even rendering has gone the same way.
We do quite a bit for small builders, one big house on a plot types and they really like that we can do everything.
