apprenticeship advice

you got to way up the pros and cons mate..

Positives : None

Negatives : sucking dust everyday and get covered in s**t and have a bad back, bad knees and arthritis by 35 by all means go for it

I'm a qualified spread and spark....spread first then spark...if I'd have trained as a spark first I never would have started plastering

i served a 5 year apprenticeship in plastering. would i do it again NO.
to much competition , there is a plasterer on every corner. there are 5 in a quarter of a mile radius of my home.
The builders are trying to break the trade down into separate sections, i.e., skimmer, tacker, dry liner, renderer, floor screeder, eternal wall specialist, fibrous plaster.
When the self finish plaster arrives here from Scandinavia it will become a DIY trade.
i have always made a living, heavy work, a lot of plasterers have health problems, there are other jobs that you can earn a lot better money.

Depends where your based mate, If you aim to take pride in your job and concentrate on leaving job/van/tools spotless you’ll stand out from the rest and always find work in domestics. Not many variables in plastering and your not likely get a call back for leaking plaster. Can’t see robots taking over our job just yet

Learn fast , pick your specialist part of the trade and don't work cheap
It's an enjoyable trade if you enjoy physical labour and be sensible about dust,
I like that the old " do it all " plasterer is always interesting as you intersect between bare bones and second fix

hi all I am just finished secondary school and have been offered an apprenticeship in plastering . is this a good career to pursue thanks .
Best advice you ever gonna get mate...
There's always some old "cocksucker" on a job gonna watch you for ten minutes... Gonna go "you wanna tip lad?"...
You got 2 options....
You go "f**k off you old cocksucker".....
Or... You go "what you got dad?"...
That old c**ts just educated you and saved you not just money but your back, later on in life...
Up to you, but thats how i got to be able to do what i do...

Do a couple of weeks work experience first, this will give you an idea if it’s for you. To be a successful plasterer, you have to be a self-starter, capable of getting out of bed early, near & tidy, not a snowflake, don’t mind being cold & wet, enjoy heavy manual labour, good sense of humor (you’ll need it), and impenetrable hardness and personality. If you feel you have all this, fukc the marines, you can be a spread :)

i say plasterers , 2 of us served apprenticeships ,Robin and myself. there is Robins son who he taught. the other 2 are jumped up bucket washers.
i started in April 63. 6 months on probation then a 5 year indentured apprenticeship. i was considered lucky as it had just been reduced from 7 year apprenticeship.

You can make a good living out of plastering, but hard work is the key to that. It's not easy on the body and sometimes the mind, there are lots of better jobs within the industry.

No is my advice. if you want a trade do carpentry , spark or plumber. Stay away from the wet trades . Its your life at the end of the day and if plastering is what you want then go for it. Good luck.
