Anyone seeing a down turn in work yet?

Starting to see a fair few trades scratching around for work again...

Is the recession that (statistically) overdue is finally coming?

Anybody got any Plan 'B's

Yes, start a car rental business.
How do you like that option? lol

No seriously I think everyone is (I mean all jobs and people) earning about the same as in 2020 but the price of everything is way higher and the books are starting to settle and catch up on folks and everyone is getting more skint

It is starting to feel a bit like 2008 again...

recession has well and truly landed, and over coming months it will get worse,
now inland revenue are putting new laws in place, much stricter, people have to pay for there own software etc etc, talking to a joiner yesterday who is packing in , he is 62 , and just can not be bothered with this, together with grim outlook on economy,
house sales slowing down up here, some sites on hold,

cost of materials just going through the roof and not coming down in forseeable future, cost of living gas/food/electric , all going up,
people apprehensive about there jobs/no confidence in goverment, ,brexit,

list just goes on and on, and this is the reality,

p.s. how does any young couple buy a house in london at todays prices,

nearly forgot, talking to neighbour, who has a good secure job at cumberland infirmary, single bloke, home owner/paid his mortgage on time every time last 9 years, has savings,
he applied for a loan as he wants to move, bank has asked to see his last 6 months bank statements first,
now 3 months ago he ordered a pair of black silk pyjamas from harrods on line, cost £150.00 , but hey why not , single bloke all bills paid etc,
well bank picked this up , said he was being wasteful and refused loan, so no move to new house, and multiply this around the country ,

just pleased i am the age i am, but really feel sorry for these young kids leaving school, scary times ahead,

It's mental... Hate the power the banks have over people. It won't get better either.

I have 4 years left on one of my mortgages and that is going to go a long way to help with our lives but my god the next four years could break us.

I have also become the master of not wasting materials ... Currently building a shed out of all the left over timber and whatever I can scavenge....

What a time to be alive

Things local are very slow I keep thinking about retiring, then the phone rings.
I had the offer of some work in the city of London, day work making good on a new 51 story tower block. £50 per hour. I dont want to be on the 6am train every morning.
My granddaughter who is a solicitor tells me the only house sales are old properties. No new builds are selling, and most developers have either slowed right down or stopped.
One large builders merchant has gone bust, Kent and Blaxill. and other will follow. Jewsons phoned me up to find out if i had any work that they could quote for? I must be way down the list the amount of materials that I need.

My local builders merchant has been hounding me every week as they have nothing coming in. The main branch boss was out site door knocking the other day.

I think we are in for a grim time over the next few years

jewsons closed branch in carlisle approx 3 months ago, and there remaining branch is just ticking over,

more handles, local firm who supplied door furniture , closed down last year, employed approx 40 people, and this is happening all over the country,
its the cost of materials that gets me, not just plaster but everything, and these are price increases that are just not normal, not the standard inflation type,
this is something much more serious,
.

Look everyone stop worrying, it's only four years and them we can replace the communist party with a different shower of shite.

I'm absolutely stacked with work until Mid-January and I have 12 quotes to write up. If they all came in I'd be booked until the end of March. Currently charging £470 a day...£120 a day goes to lab.

40% tax if they work those days everyday

As someone said to me once - “don’t get greedy”.

Great if you can get it, and on the race to the top, it also causes a race to the bottom.
Thing is, in our trade, especially if you're site oriented, you need to make as much money as possible before you're fifty.
IMO and experience there is absolutely no point in working cheaply for people or companies thinking of the long-term future, as you won't be working for those same clients in ten, fifteen or twenty years.
Same thing with regards to day work, f**k that when you're young, fit and motivated. Day work is for when you've slowed down in your latter years, if ever.
