I will probably still do that anyway (or too.) There aren't a lot of plasterers around here, but I'll scout around and make them an offer they can't refuse--to labor for cheap, or free if neccessary--for a day or two.
By the way, for a board to work off of, is some plain plywood good?
Do you use regular smooth plywood or do you need the kind that's finished on one side with birch or oak etc?
Do you have to do anything to the board before using it--paint or varnish it or anything so it doesn't suck the...
No, but there's not much call for plaster around here, so it's not carried by the vast majority of building material suppliers. Â Â I did remember another supplier just down the road who carries it though. Â Going to be much more convienent to get now.
Yeah, and for only 20 quid (or something like that :) .)
Seriously, I'm not expecting a DVD tutorial to make me a master plasterer. I was just hoping it might give me enough info to get started making some repairs or have a go at skimming a wall without completely botching it up.
Hi bigsegs,
For impact resistance, is it not enough to just skim with one veneer coat to get a decent benefit? Â Â I've seen it said where it's better to go with a base coat and a veneer coat for more impact resistance. Â Â Sure, it's thicker-it's going to be stronger. But is one coat...
Ahh...another complication.  Well nothing worth doing is easy.   Will see how it goes.  I'll be trying my hand at some repairs and patches soon. It's said a plaster finish is nicer than a plain plasterboard or a skim coat of joint compound, so I'm looking forward to seeing how it...
LoL. Ya. Like me trying to figure out what some of your slang terms mean and not being able to find PVA right off.
Sheetrook (which is really a brand name) or drywall (which you call plasterboard) and simply taping the seams and fastener holes has been the preferred wall and ceiling method in...
> Im guessin here but i dont think your in the uk???
Hi bigsegs. I guess that's becoming evident. I'm in Brooklyn, NY, USA. I have a couple of uncles in the UK though. :)
> ordinary plaster to me is thistle board finish or thistle multi finish, some places deal with knauf products.
Never...
I couldn't find any regular plaster the other day when I went looking for it. I finally located some at a building supplier in the next county, and I'll have to drive over there to get it.
Actually, what happened was I added too much powder to the water and it got way way too thick, then I added more water to thin it back to "normal." Maybe that speeded it up a lot. Anyway, I'll try again, probably tomorrow. Thanks.
> a plastering trowel is a plastering trowel whether u use it for screed, render, concrete or skimming...
your prolly just expectin it to be floppy
Hi again bigsegs. Ya, I thought a plaster trowel might be a little more flexible then a concrete one because the trowels I use for joint compound...
Hi,
I did mix it thick. Â I'll try again with a thinner mix. Â Â It got hard before I even got it all out of the bucket so the substrate wasn't the problem.
Thanks. Â
Hi. I've never seen EZFil45. I've used Sheetrock brand Durabond 45 and 90 though. Is it like that? http://www.usg.com/USG_Marketing_Content/usg.com/web_files/Documents/Prod_Data_and_Submittal_Sheets/ShtrkDrBndJoint_Compound-Data_Sheet_J17A.pdf
Plaster of Paris is used just about anywhere I...
Every time I've tried to work with Plaster of Paris,   http://www.usg.com/navigate.do?resource=/USG_Marketing_Content/usg.com/web_files/products/prod_details/USG_Plaster_of_Paris.htm        I find it's workability time limited to about 5 to 8 minutes.   It says 30 minutes...
Hi,
I got a few Marshalltown flat trowels from about 12" x 4" to 16" x 4" I've used for a bit of cement work. Â Â I thought (assumed? = prone to being mistaken) that they were too thick/stiff than what would be right for plastering work. A Marshalltown representative I asked about it though...
Yeah. This is what taping is... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDGFs4uYNS8 just smoothing the seams and screw holes in drywall (plasterboard). At the end of this video he does a ceiling texture treatment with the same material which is joint compound. I don't know if you guys ever use that...
Hi bigsegs. Â Thanks for the tool list.
> trowels... screwfix/toolfix/anyolddecenttoolshop...marshaltown/refina/ragni
Only one I've ever heard of is Marshalltown, but good enough. Â Only thing I have to do is figure out which trowel. Â I bought a rectangular 14" Marshalltown trowel...
What trowels do I need for plastering interior walls? All my big drywall taping trowels are curved for taping joints and I don't think they'd work good with plastering or skim coating a whole wall.
Hi,
I've done some drywall taping and have become somewhat competent at it, though not great. I want to have a go at some small plastering jobs around my own property. Mostly patching imperfections in the existing plaster over wood lathe, filling in some spots where the plaster has come loose...
