Spat finish= spatula, as in just flatten with the big refina or speedskim? I did first pass of about 4 mm then mesh then skimmed mesh in with 2mm then went over all with 3mm then refina spatula to flatten all pretty good then sponged any lines, came iut good

Surely any moisture that would have damaged pb would damage a gypsum plaster such as the bonding coat I was using anyway? I suppose cement render is what you are thinking of?
