Why wouldn't you sponge your base coat iv been doing ewi for 5 years now and never heard of not sponging up do you just hit it with a spachler and just leave it ? Then top coat straight on top with out a sponge first ??
I would just over board it screw into old joists and through a broom coat over it or bonding coat were its uneven low/high points get it as flat/ level as poss use a feather edge if needed then just two coats of skim if you don't want to do that just lower the ceiling with a hole new ceiling...
