I would get rid of the plaster ceiling rose. Overboard the ceiling making sure that the plasterboard spans the crack on the ceiling and then skim the plasterboard. Forget about the payment to this other chancer dont chase good money after bad.
What I have found with a plastering firm is that you either have to have a very small or very large workforce. The small firm can pick and choose their work and the large firms can charge high prices as they have numbers to carry out large contracts.
You do need to go supply and fix only so as to get a return on the materials. Collecting the payments from the builders was hard work and every week the boss was in court taking action against them for large sums of money.
Essex board or Tintest board It was made at the Airscrew Way roc works at Marks Tey. The local councils would use it upstairs as it was cheaper then plasterboard.
At one time British Gypsum manufacture plasterboard with a layer of polythene imbedded in the board to produce a vapour barrier.
