This reminded me of a shop in Bury St Edmunds where I was working .
The daughter and her mother told me that they thought the loft was haunted as they had heard noises . They ask me if I would go up into the loft with the daughter to have a look. While we where in the loft I noticed that the...
When I was an apprentice, if working under 3 miles I would cycle to work. We would be paid traveling time measured from the firms yard.
If the work was out in the sticks [Suffolk] in the yard for 6.30 for pick up in firms vans or mini bus. Our tool box which the leading plasterer made for the...
Firms like Anglia lime produce a lime based exterior paint. As regards the cracking I would guess that someone mixed white cement with the lime on application.
The college for plastering closed in Colchester by the time of my apprenticeship in 1963. They asked me if I would like to go to college in Cambridge ,60 mile away. That was about as difficult as a 15 year old getting to the moon in those days.
I have recently worked on a large bungalow. They had the walls drilled on the interior and the insulation pumped out. I was told that after about 15 years the insulation had all slumped to the lower third of the walls. They replaced the insulation with the polystyrene ball type. Then had the...
It does look to me like a Tyrollean finish.
I think that it has been sprayed on top of an old render. I can see near the window frames where the old render was marked out in blockwork. This may be the reason with the keying of the Tyrolean. Plenty of cracks on the extension that needs...
The way that I was taught in London was keep the base coat as tight as possible. We would scrape off to the scrim. Pin the mesh then an other tight coat ,finish to receive the thin coat.
In the Netherlands they wanted a ticker top coat . They would fit widgets to the walls after 1 st coat which...
As you are thinking about putting mesh over the walls. it would be a lot better to bed the mesh into a coat of Rendaid with a decent scratch to key the finish coat.
As it is a very exposed property, use plastic angle beads. Not galvanised or stainless beads.
Mixing sand and cement lime for external render. You are 30 years out of date!
For sand and cement render use Tarmac One Coat Render. pre bagged just add water you have the perfect mix. It all finishes the same colour and the sand is sharp enough to give a perfect finish. 1 bag covers 1 metre...
NO it is not ok. That is recycled paper, the infill is recycled material, the only thing that you paid for was the paper on the face side, this has tiny holes to key the plaster.
You are not going to find any gypsum plaster in France. They only have lime plaster . When we work in France we take our own British gypsum plaster with us as . Best bet would be go to Wickes and find out what is available.
Hector, I have not seen the advert I guess that is R J Dean they do advertise on local media. He is a member on this forum ,been a few years since he has posted.
There is no large plastering com. in Ipswich since A J O'Connell folded.
I had to join the NHBC years ago when I had a period that I built properties. I did build 17 properties ,stopping when a recession hit. As I am well known as a plastering contractor in my area I did get quite a few plastering jobs from them. The NHBC is just an insurance co.
If I know that the work is going out to contract I dont bother to quote. What I do like is when the owner of the property asks me if I would accept a commission? always a winner that one!
In the Netherlands there are just 2 prices for plastering on site work. 1 for housing and 1 for Commercial. The choice the customer has is who can start the work first. With very few main plastering contractors who all have large direct work force. Most of their staff have worked for the same...
In the last recession a national builder shut the housing site in Clacton. They told all sub contractors, builders merchants and work force that they will not be any payments made for 3 months. After 3 months they sent out pay checks post dated for a further 3 months. Some of the subbies lost...
We have recently finished a modern grand design house on the waterfront at Brightlingsea , Essex. The builder found Cedar too expensive so used a cheaper alternative which will age as silver. We rendered the walls in thin coat finish which gives the same appearance as Mono. Thin coat is faster...
We did use Knauf or Kips as it is branded on the continent. Kips gold or black band. We used it to daub out to beads, fill chases, float out reveals. They do not use plasterboard. The walls are built with blocks of gypsum, which are all dovetailed and perfectly straight. Green blocks for wet...
We was spray plastering self finishing plaster in the Netherlands in the 90s. I just can not believe that it has never been tried in UK. It was Sigma plaster from Finland, this plaster is now part of the Tarmac group so it may make its way here eventually.
You can get a good price on direct loads of plasterboard, about 600 per load.
A couple of local plastering contractors have purchased their own small builders merchant to get the best price and then they can control the deliveries.
Son, I would hate to be skimming out those properties. There is 714 sq m , ceilings and walls.. 3 metre high ceilings on ground floor. That works out a £ 3 per m sg..
I floated and set 1 small room on Friday my own. I was struggling. When I got home I tested positive for Covid. I felt drained...
Our local developer of housing estates has told all contractors that they either take a 10% cut or they can go. This is to cover the costs of the add ons that they have had to offer in an attempt to sell their stock. They have not cut the price of the properties. These properties cost up to 1.25...
