Hello all. I have been plastering for 30 years & I would consider myself very experienced. I have always used pva on over skims, I have tried blue grit on the last few re skims due to there being vinyl silk paint on walls & ceilings as I have found that pva is not ideal on this type of background unless a shovel full of sharp sand is added. I skimmed a kitchen & dining room about 3 weeks ago & used blue grit on everything except plasterboard. I got a call today from the customer telling me that the kitchen ceiling skim is coming off in large areas after the painter attempted to paint it. The other walls that I had skimmed that had blue grit on apparently seem 100% but the ceiling has failed to adhere properly. The finish that I used was carlite finish which is the most common finish in Northern Ireland. Any ideas as to what caused this? I left the blue grit overnight to dry. Cheers

The blue grit is still on the ceiling And apparently it seems sound . Going tomorrow to have a look but it might be a bad bag of carlite, doing my head in this one!

Sorry pal posted at the same time, that is strange as pre grits are usually very good, maybe the finish but I can't comment as I haven't used carlite.

Did the ceiling get dusty inbetween you skimming it? Was the area that was exposed gritty or smooth coz you have to even this stuff out? What gear was it? Cheers

would be surprised if it was anything to do with u using carlite finish, bluegrit is so bloody gritty i would have thought that any finish would stick to it like s**t to a blanket,,maybe like flynny says did it get dusty

No it didn't get dusty in between app of blue grit and skimming. Will have a look tomorrow bu t apparently it is off the blue grit very cleanly.

First thing that popped into my mind was grease. Did you put the blue grit on the night before? Maybe they had a f*ck off fry up before you skimmed the ceiling in the morning!

I always brush blue grit on .. when I tried rolling it on it didn't cover right and looked way to weak in terms of the paint shinning through .... not saying its this though if you covered it well

Only other thing I can think is did you mix each tub up with a whisk or by hand ??

Mixed it with a whisk and always use carlite or multi for reskimming as board finish isnt available in N. ireland any more, lovely gear though as I used it a few years back.

If it's failed between the grit and the skim then I would be pointing the blame at the grit.... if it's the blue grit off the substrate then I would be looking at what it went over ;-)

Your obviously know that but for others in the future who may read this:)

Keep us posted :)

Blue grit still on ceiling

Will keep you posted! My thoughts on this is pva over the Blue grit then reskim.
It has failed between the grit and the skim I believe.

Forgot to mention there was a sparky pulling and hauling at cables for low voltage lights 2 days after it was skimmed, he had a problem with a trapped cable somewhere in the centre of the ceiling. Mmmmmmmmm

A little bit belt and braces but I always did 2 passes of Wba... one in one direction and one in the other... but always rolled it on....

Cant see it being the sparky ... normally multi sticks like rocking horse s**t to blue grit

Be interested too know the outcome as well as I use Blue Grit a lot (will be with summer coming lol)

Might also be worth checking the manufacturer date / expiry on the tub if you still have ???

Pics might help if you get a chance ?

Will know better tomorrow, just find it weird that the walls are apparently 100% and they were treated with blue grit also.
