Hello. I’m here to pick up tips for skimming over torn plasterboard paper. Some of the lining paper is difficult to remove. How do I keep walls level as there is a bump down one section of the plasterboard where it doesn’t seem to be screwed to the joist. There’s a bit of loose plaster near the ceiling which I suppose I must fill first. Then there’s scrimming the gap between the board and the solid wall.

Dry too quick? Not if i pva first.

If your main aim is practicing skimming you’ll have far better odds with new board.

Honestly those boards are a mess. Do it once, do it well.

Really? Everyone has an opinion but nobody has a good explanation. I still haven’t had any tips apart from pulling it down.

If it’s solid , just skim over it bonding out where necessary

The problem with old board like that is that the paper surface can lose bond with the core, when it gets damp you can get bulges.
The advice to rip it out is entirely appropriate, but if you're going to fanny about with it don't be surprised if it doesn't work out.

Thanks Chrispy. A proper plasterer on here at last. I already wet it with pva and no bulges yet. The paper came off in some parts when I scraped off the decorators lining paper that had been painted over.

Indeed he is, and he can read and write, although his personal assistant Doris does that these days.

I know plasterers have some brains. If I thought I could just slap it on I wouldn’t be asking here. Respect for writing a book on the trade. One plasterer had an old tome on the subject that was 2” thick.
