Can I introduce myself ? I left school at 15, served 5yr apprenticeship. All plasterers in those days wore non bleached white bib and braced overalls.
I got a 714 certificate when I was 21 and worked on the grip. 90 % of the work was internal plastering. We had clerk of works armed with straight edge on most jobs !
Now 40yrs on still I am still self employed with men working for me since the past 30 years. I still specialise in traditional plastering but carry out a lot of render work . ( K rend etc.) I cant be bothered with skimming. I recon that a real plasterer can spot a chancer within 5 minutes ie how they put the plaster on and off the hawk and obviously what the walls look like when the lights go on or the sun shines. At the end of the day, what the customer wants is guys who know what they are talking about in all aspects of the trade. Competitive price. Go in and out with no mess but leaving a good standard of work and your name will get you plenty of work.

Oh the chancers are a plenty and they often don't realise they are chancers, had a lad, Irish/welsh origins, thirty yrs in the game, done what I call helicopter plastering, not a clue, trowels longer than myself...

Welcome mate , I'm new as well . Well put mate . I've actually been on a job where in someone's house the plasterer b4 me actually made so much mess they couldn't open the door to the room lol !!! These cow boys are shocking !!

Helicopter plastering ? I've seen someone from an agency firm when I was younger ......... He didn't even know how to knock up hardwall in a bath lol

Helicopter plastering , I call the work someone does when the keep going in circles on a ceiling, no straight strokes, every stroke 2ft or less all at different angles, you can see it in the final coat too..
