Hiya chaps,

While working at my snail pace earlier I started looking at a wall that had been confusing me for a while.

I thought it was a little strange that there was one alcove in this bedroom but not another but after stripping the paper I noticed that on the left side the plasterboard was used and feathered into the wall with some white stuff (like easifill or something similiar).

Question is... why is all this covered? I know there was a trend to bin period features 30 years ago so I understand why the fireplace was removed however why would you completely cover up an alcove? its not like the house is massive and surely any space is good space which could accommodate a wardrobe, desk, chest of drawers etc??

The plan now is to remove the plasterboard to expose the alcove, add a small cast iron fireplace, make good, skim and get a wood man in to sort the skirts out.

Maybe there's something walled up behind it, like a skimmer.... :RpS_scared:

Someone at work reckons that its because when they removed teh fire it was a quicker and therefore cheaper job to just plasterboard the wall making the room square than going into the alcove where you have more coving and skirt internal and external mitres.

Sounds barmy to me but some of you Dads have probably lived through all this :)

I'd love to get a serious answer to the next question...

Unfortunately the corner beading has been removed, so in order to match it with the other corner I need to add this edging into the corner (i have a spare I took from another alcove that has been squared off

This is the edging I am talking about:

And this is where I want to put it...

My idea was to remove the existing render around the corner and attach the edging to the corner, use a rendering stop bead and bond out/feather to make flush with the existing wall.. then put a skim stop bead on top and skim.

Anyone have any advice on this I'm not sure how to attach the beading to the corners, maybe old fashioned wood wedges and nails?
