I usually use sugar soap, but you've got to work hard and keep scraping down from the top to get it off. Thankless job. PvA or grit after...youve got the time it takes for the board to revolve!

I'll be honest mate, I've been shocked how many on here will just PVA straight over wallpaper paste and happily skim away.
The builder had someone sugar soap the walls yesterday, but I know full well that they won't be done properly.

skimming over the wallpaper paste won’t effect the bond. It re-emulsifies just like pva. the only issue is it can go gluey with pva n skim. s**t to skim. quickest thing to do is grit over it. You’ll never get it off otherwise

We are gritting the walls mate, now that the paste has been removed.

I.d only ever use grit on gloss

Just how bad was the paste Andy.......I have re' skimmed over miles of walls and never had any problems . But then again i have not seen your job . As i always tell people every job has to be judged on its own and the mk1 eye ball is the best way of deciding what prep is needed .

Never used grit , assume that it's one coat, PVA wet coat would dilute any paste, so imagine that's why I've never had a problem , yeehaah

Grits s**t . Like skimming artex. And I dont think it controls suction like pva.

Just how bad was the paste Andy.......I have re' skimmed over miles of walls and never had any problems . But then again i have not seen your job . As i always tell people every job has to be judged on its own and the mk1 eye ball is the best way of deciding what prep is needed .

It's thick in places and just a touch of moisture and it's sticky as f**k.

I have gritted over paste for years with no problem, it doesn’t go on as easily but once dry it is same as anything else to go over.

What do you do when faced with walls covered in wallpaper paste?
I've always been of the opinion that it should be completely removed, and not by me.
Your opinions are valued, yes even yours John.

Price to take it off.

Otherwise it's a minefield. Come back and customer hasn't done it properly, then you either have to come back and lose money add it on to the bill leaving you open to accusations of price hiking or do it yourself for nowt.

Like top spread said when you pva the walls it reacts with the paste and foams up I scrape all the s**t off where it's foamed and pva again but grit is the quicker option

Wallpaper paste is made from modified starch, stuffed if I'm relying on that to hold my plaster to the wall.

They won't be because its a s**t boring job and takes ages to get off. Last lot i encountered, I used the cementone green grit. May have been fine with PVA, but customers paying so no problem.

Time is of a premium at the moment. We're trying to work his job in on wet days (his choice) whilst doing a render. So he's in a rush but expects us to fanny about doing labourers work, he then lets us down with materials and generally f**k**g about not getting bits ready. Then it's "when will you be finished?".

Had this bollox myself. Clearly unable to manage his own job, you're a specialist with a contract and other better paying work. If you went down the route of helping him by being a labourer he'll always expect it and to pay labouring wages.
