Sounds like a pain in the arse thats waiting to bite you, I personally would give it a swerve .

It would be a heavy price from me as he sounds like a headache

Yes I'd do it but make it absolutely clear that some fine filling will need doing after the mist coat and lights are on. I'd be more than happy to do the filling/sanding.
I've done just this where uplighters are being fitted in the past.
