Thats what I found in my plastering days. At first you do the obvious and don.t stand for it. Lose your temper, stamp your feet and get aggressive. After all that and they simply tell you the money isn,t there and they still win then you feel worse for failing than before you tried to sort it out.

I also think it is down to if your face fits and personality. I was always on the pay last if at all list as there was other subby's on the job who always got paid no problem. Makes you wonder?

Anyway, twice a year I got hit and got used to it. Simple. Best thing I did giving up contract work, let some other victim have it. As for the contractors well thats their loss. Sod em!

i'VE GOT THE SAME PROBLEM WITH ONE OF THE BUILDERS I WORK FOR , current ly owes me £1500 and has done for several months . I know all the other subbies have had their money , also know that he's dead skint and hasn't got it . But he knows that out of all the blokes , im the one who can stand the credit . What are you supposed to do? If i jump up and down and scream blue murder , theres a fair chance that i'll never see it . Whereas if i'm nice and conciliatory i know i will get it eventually.
This is one of the reasons why i wont go and price jobs in the wifes flash car and i wont go and buy a new van because you dont want to look like you've got loads of money.

I had one builder who did mainly small extensions and he kept back the last jobs money to make you do the next one. Start this one and I will pay you for the last one the day you start. Had to put up with this until the winter lull and once I got paid up I had the greatest of pleasure when he rang up with his next job and told him no his credit history is not good enough. He had the cheek to argue about it!

I have had cheques bounce, rung up and made an appointment to get paid only to find they have gone out when I turn up (loads of times that one), Ring up and the family know my voice so sorry he's not in. Twice turned up and they get an empty cheque book stub and say sorry I forgot I've ran out of cheques. My invoice was never received lost in the post, cheques lost in the post but in 31 years of business I have always received my invoices and they have always received my cheques? Strange how the lost in the post trick is only on me. Had one builder who only paid the last Friday in the month and the night before he said there was a snag with a bathroom window reveal, sought it and I will get paid. Went round and nothing wrong with it. Even his joiner couldn't see a fault so realising it was a delayment of payment trick I just splashed loads of water on it to make it look like I had done something. Rung up for my cheque but too late will have to wait till next month.

Then there are the cheeky builders who open up a monthly credit account with you. Not that I give any credit, they say it's company policy. Didn't tell me that before I started the job. This particular builder I did a job due to finish the 2nd of the month so I invoiced him 3 days beforehand so I had to wait 30 days instead of 58. Refused to pay at the end of the month so that was the end of that builder. Its not bad, you as a builder take on a job and simply get other people to do it for you and have them pay for it for you. Who needs bank overdrafts.

Best thing I did getting out of plastering. Private only for me.

the builder knows that you are not pushing for money, as you can afford to wait. those who push the hardest will be paid first. you are not a finance co. you are a plasterer. you will have to be more choosy with your customers, the builder will not be standing beside you when you are in the bankruptcy court.
when i go to quote for work i use the wifes rav 4. i try to keep my own car away from customers. as i try to sell the fact that i am doing them a favour, not kicking their arse.

Cant believe some of the posts im reading here, and don't understand how you can graft your nuts off only for the builder to take the p1ss out of you, if you haven't got the balls to stand up for your self then you deserve everything you get. If you've done the work and theres nowt wrong with it then you draw your money.

Couldn't agree more.

well some people do not like it. the usual question is how do you do it? that last plasterer turned up in a 20 year escort and was covered in plaster.
i have had a few women tell me that they are coming out for a drive in that, and leave their husbands looking after the kids.
i have now got the woman on my side,so the work is mine at my price.

i've had it once, about 3 months ago. Board and skim a ceiling and fill in a hole in a wall where rats had been getting in, and she had had someone silicone all the entrys up. I told her if i fill in this hole it'll look crap, the whole wall needs doing. She said dont worry etc...just need it filling in as ive got estate agents coming round. So after id boarded the ceiling and skimmed it, i knocked up a bit of plasterboard adhesive and put that in the hole. After it had gone off it was slightly bulging, about 1/8 inch in the middle. ( i had explained she will need to scrape it and rub it down, the wall was a mess anyway, so when panted you could never tell where the hole was ) When she came home she paid me cash and a cheque for the last £100. She was happy. A week later i get a phone call, from a man, who wanted me to meet him on site about some bad plastering?? So i said where? he explained he was working on behalf for her...LOL...ok whats the problem mate? That hole you filled in needs rubbing down. I explained id told her SHE needs to do that, its nothing to do with me. He said why didn't you take the wall down and re do it? explained again, its what she wanted. He then told me the bathroom has leaked and soaked the new ceiling, it had cracked where the water came through, and when im going to come and fix it...then i swore at him and put the phone down. Cheque was cancelled the next day. I knew she didnt have much money in the beggining, as she wanted it cheaper than i said. But you win some, you lose some. I found out she has had her wheels stolen, but was only 3rd party only, and couldnt afford new ones, so haha unlucky....

You should have went round and cut a few holes out - on the pretext of doing the repairs 'their way'. Then fukd off never to return :RpS_thumbup:

Go smash the job up! It'll cost them more to get put right and put word around that he's a bad payer. What's he gonna do? I've done this 3times once with the police involved,£80 on the spot fine no criminal record for public disorder lol. Still scum though in my eyes. I was tried out @6 times in 23 yrs so not bad . Later on I had massive 'taz' stickers on.my vans (I'm tax mad lol) sometimes customers would ask the ladswhattheystand for? The reply jokingly was you'll find out if you don't pay.

No point really for £100. have fractured the odd law in my time, jaywalking and singing to loud in church. I Used to be a bouncer and escort ( not the s*x kind, the bodyguard type ) in my spare time,so i used to look after different people. As i said i knew something wasn't right as she was going on about money all the time. I said to my old lady, if the phone call had gone " hi its lisa etc, is there any way you can make that patch you filled in, in the kitchen, look any better? ive tried and it doesn't look any better?" Then i would have said yes no problem, and nipped round, and spent 10 minutes scraping and sanding. But never mind. When I was younger and a tearaway, i worked for a guy ( who taught me ) and we rendered a gable. The guy in the house knocked him ( i still got paid but thats not the point, i was on £20 a day ). So i sat outside and the guy went to work, took me 4 hours, but i got the whole lot off, and i went and smashed loads of holes in the existing render, and in the upvc on the front of the house. Neighbours thought i was just working, as i d been there the week before. Never heard anything from him again...Its cash before i walk out the door from now on.

my uncle once was told by the wide eyed boy type contractor, thats it you are getting no more money, so he played the game and pretending he was taking this, afterwards he scudded the inside of the house with sand/cement mixed with an oil based floor primer, all walls doors /windows scudded in two houses, it was back in the days before mobiles, emails,.. Cash work so no paper trail but he reckoned they would of killed him if they ever found him
