Hey. Im an apprentice need to get my own tools etc. my boss use's a 13" trowel for laying on and then an 11" (i think) for flattening down and polishing. his 11" is a lot older and has a sharper edge giving him a better finish but he also finds it easier on his arm/wrist flattening with a slightly smaller trowel. Being as im now looking to purchase trowels etc do i need to get 2 different sizes? or is it better to just use one trowel for everything? and would you guys recommend any particular sizes or is it all down to personal pref? i completely trust what my boss has told and shown me. i just wanted to check and see what you guys thought.
many thanks

A lot of things in this game are down to personal preference mate.

There was a thread recently that threw up about 7 different methods of skimming a wall.

So what ever feels right for you is the right trowel.....................or method.

yep.... if you do a search of teh forum using the search box on the top right you will find many many answers... but in the end its what you feel comfortable doing :-)

its worth noting that different makes will feel differently too, i have a Marshalltown and a Tyzack, both stainless, both same size, but the difference in flexability stands out like a sore thumb..

If your boss is useing a two trowel set up just follow him, your not going to go far wrong . When you develop your own trowel skills you may well find a better way which suits you better.

Id advise you have a few trowels on the go,that way you are breaking them in.so if you damage or loose etc your best finishing trowel you have a back up.
you can buy them pre broken in but they aint up to scratch in my opinion, you cant beat breaking them in yourself by usage and getting a feel for them with the handle etc.
