Chaps,

I've just signed up to ask the advice - of those that know!

We're building a timber framed self build on the Chester/North Wales borders.

The surface finish of the house is a mix of white render, cedar cladding and limestone (following the planners direction).

Our timber frame is landing next week, and if possible/ambient temps allow, I'd like to get the carrier board on at least before the rains set it!!

But, what carrier board???!?!?!

So many options - which, for the most part, leave me confused!!

I think one of our challenges is the surface make-up.....i.e, the layers of battens, counter battens, counter counter battens for the cedar etc etc.....so, we're slightly constrained by the board types we can use.

Blu Clad looks reasonable, as it's weatherproof, can be left un-rendered for upto 6 months and can be applied with a single vertical batten cir. 30mm?

Any experience/comments on this?

I know that Knauf also offer a product, but they spec a batten/counter batten arrangement which takes the surface level out too far...relative to the stone/cedar etc.

We have about a 400m2 coverage too - so, cost is also a consideration.

Keen to hear any experienced comments?

Thanks all....

We're also looking for somebody to do the job!

@runwithscissors can help you. He is knauf aquapanel tech guy. So can advise you on the aquapanel installation. A cavity will prob be needed so counterbatten with any board will be needed. Same spec for all really. As we are installing a timber sip house render using aquapanel
Im sure someone close to you could quote for the job

Scissors will clarify but with Knauf Aquapanel you can batten once vertically over your sheethed and membraned sub frame

Hi Sigmaf (great forum name - sure it means something....?)

As the guys above have pointed out - I am Richard Lord, The Knauf Aquapanel Exterior specialist

You certainly seem to have done your homework on the boarded render market and have had a look at the details that system suppliers publish. You also seem very aware of the abutment details between your cladding systems, which means that you must have a good Architect or designer on board - which is GREAT news as well!

The Knauf Aquapanel Exterior Brochure shows a counter batten system, this is to allow the vertical battens (that must be behind the Knauf Aquapanel) to be potentially set at closer centres than the timber studs (to suit potential high wind loads or the need for high impact areas), or to allow the cladding to be pushed out to match other cladding or block work. In reality, 90% or projects only need the vertical batten and not the horizontal cross battens..... But we / Knauf show the worst case and value engineer out, rather than show the norm and then have to tell some projects that they need to add further cost....

Please feel free to contact me on 07918766577 or send through you project details (elevations, plans, sectional details) [email protected] and we will be more than happy to assit further with a spec and if needed visits to assist fully

You can install the Knauf Aquapanel Exterior in the lead up to the cold and wetter months, tape and joint them and we will give a 6 month weathertight guarantee. When the weather is then more suitable for rendering, the boards can be cleaned down and prepped for render (in some cases, it is also possible to strike the scaffold during this time and save further money - if the time is long enough to cover the dismantle and rebuild costs)

JFE - who is referenced and has commented - is a local (ish) quality render contractor with Knauf Aquapanel Exterior exprience... we are almost finsihed on some excellent houses near Chester.... so it may be possible to show you something of a similar nature - completed (obviously, we have lost of other reference projects and potential contractors....)

Look forward to hearing from you soon!

Richard
