Which Rob as you know takes time , we all had to start some where, doing laboring or a course , if that get them the start and the feel for it , then so be it
so where do you go after you have done a course start re-skimming or rendering whole houses on your own how can you have the confidence for one thing an the knowledge to get over any problems coz no job is ever straight forward you need someone with that

are you learning by chance whilst working in peoples homes - I wouldn't like someone experimenting in my front room with new materials or techniques :RpS_laugh:
after 30+ years im still learning, but for you I will give you an example ... I use pva to do reskims and never had a problem with it but if spec says blue grit I use blue grit and to me blue grit is something new , in all my years on site and domestics I've never had to use it ,if that makes me a chancer so be it , and you are just another know it all spread like most of us including myself :RpS_thumbup:

That is down to the person ,how can i speak for everyone , our game is based on morals and self respect , most people with that will only take on what they know they can do, and at a good level ,so small areas at a time , sure you must have turned down work over the years for that reason

If painters r on more than us we might as well throw the trowel in now boys. Everyone I come across is always pissed from night before moaning to **** about anything. For **** sake when I first started out they carried little scraper in back bin fill in any little knocks/dents or watever
Now they don't do **** All .

agree with you there casplas. had always just used pva. if shiny i'd stir in a handful of multi. tried blue grit et al but a: i couldn't be arsed with the extra time it added to the job, and b: got a bit of mottling / blooming on two jobs within last three months because i went over before it was dry because i couldn't be arsed waiting. had i ever had a callback with just the pva - no. back to just pva,

if you call yourself a plasterer you should have the ability to do every job too a high standard and knowledge of your trade to do it if someone is paying you there hard earned money to do it, i am pretty lucky that im 3rd generation plasterer in my family im not on my high horse telling people what to do or its wrong doing a course just giving my opinion. but i do think its wrong when people do a course and start plastering peoples houses

Being in the game so long ,you must have seen how plastering has been broken down in different areas, skimming, tacking, coving, sreeding ,rendering, sitework ,domestic ,and so on which does allow guys to learn, a part of the trade quicker

Just a footnote to answer Cassie. I have a home there. Have been in the UK since October. fighting my cancer (dosent affect my brain). Strange thing is I can give a lot of advice online but whilst in the UK I am mentoring 3 new colleges, one trainer , Ryan and trying to help Callum get a placement. Also altered the practical course for the CITB to make it more representative of what goes on on site. Tell me what are you doing for the future of our trade?

me ??

as said before lad there on site 7 quid an hour never seen anyone work like him gear there everytime works his ass off and its just so he can be a plasterer hes finally on the tools on cupboards an having a go at finishing walls but most dont realise how long it takes to be good at what you do and be able to get over problems, ha wouldnt want my kids to be spreads but my mum said that to my dad no way our my sons being plasterers but 2 of us are but its something we really wanted to do

no I am not "just another know it all spread " but like you I have over 30+ years experience - working with a numerous plasterers gaining experience both on building sites, domestic commercial and working in fibrous factories, so I would like to think a have a bit of experience to offer my help to younger plasterers taking up the profession- but also willing to learn from other plasterers, new and old in their specialist subjects

@puddove im glad you think like that ,it will help keep trade ticking over hopefully , I hope the slippery slope stops and it becomes a single trade again but it wont happen ,well not in my lifetime anyway, as for fibrous I've never ever taken to it some lovely work out there but its not for me , I have worked with plenty of different spreads good and bad ,but you misunderstood my first statement about moving with times ,im not here to argue a point that's obviously happening all the time , dute scrim were you gone:RpS_thumbup:

Dute scrim? Is this a member or do you nee Jute scrim (hessian) for work. i have a wharehouse full. With regard to training i think there is no way back now because the qualifications are type specific. When a new lad /lass goes for a course they no longer ask to be a plasterer. they want to be a screeder a lime technologist etc. There are qualifications for every separate part of the trade. The fault lies many years back and I am afraid when you become good at one aspect of the trade you concentrate on that to earn the most money. there are very few plasterers left as in the old term (mainly family taught). The problem runs deeper as well kids at school are taught to be academic gone seem to be the craft training classes.I saw the mention of the lack of courses in colleges mentioned. That may have been due to the lack of uptake however they now mostly have waiting lists. The weakness now is after college on job training. Because of the demise of the larger company's the trade is reliant on you guys to adopt and teach these wannabees before they get fed up and chance their arm. Do not be afraid to take a trainee if you specialize if that's what he would like to do, all the better if you are old school and can teach varied plastering subjects but at least offer these kids a chance to be professional. I like all of you am still learning new materials new technique after 55 years. I can no longer put plaster on walls my health does not allow it however I still try to contribute to our art with the knowledge I have gained. I do believe it is time for a few more to step up to the plate

nice @topstrop , as for dute I was joking:RpS_cool: give me fibatape anyday , I've had two past apprentices that followed it through. they have been in trade 18 /15 years respectively but they only learnt what I wanted to do while they was working with me ,good workers good luck to both of them as it happens I still go see my mentor from time to time 28 yrs on, as you say its split up as a trade and wont come back to one , hope you get well and all is good

Going fine all the cancer cut out no infected lymphs or organs so just a 6 month recovery now. The only reason I mentioned the jute was because it is quite hard to find.

hi casplas
you mention in one of your reply's that's fibrous is not for you- may I ask why?- do you do mainly solid work internal /external/dry lining, by the way you missed a marvellous trip to British gypsum- even got chance to check out a few new plasters.

Found this very interesting statistic regarding the shortage of tradesmen in the UK?
Read to bottom of list and you'll see what I'm getting at

The percentage fall in the number of tradesmen since 2009 to December 2013
Plumbers - down 25 per cent
Bricklayers - down 19 per cent
Window cleaners - down 18 per cent
Joiners - down 17 per cent
Roofers - down 11 per cent
Gardener - down 9 per cent
Builders - down 7 per cent
Carpenters - down 7 per cent
Painter and decorators - down 5 per cent
Plasterers - up 3 percent.

It's definitely time plastering courses were STOPPED
My hard earned skills have become a joke thanks to the greedy knobsticks who run these mickey mouse courses!

Not surprised at all mate , I hate it when you hear of mass redundancies because you know whats gunna happen , they get their payoff and the next thing their doing their plastering coarse and driving round in their van with 20 years experience written all over it , I'm not bitter!

hi puddove ,fibrous as never floated my boat not active enough maybe ,not too sure why, yes I mainly do solid, d+d as for rendering I use traditional methods sand /cement same as for Tyrolean/dashing ,in my younger years I was a house basher out of one into another ,I have used Webber and some other new renders and I don't like them, as for bg tour Danny emailed me and said there wasn't enough room ?

You read it wrong pal.. it says '' 20 mins experience '' or someone says to them '' how long you been plastering '' they replty ''what time is it now ''

hi casplas - there were only about 12 of us - I think a few dropped out at the last moment, but I think there's another trip in may

yes he said that, glad you got chance to put faces to names, I will see how busy I am in may, been working in your neck of woods (darton) and in flocton next couple of weeks

hope you had your passport at hand to enter south Yorkshire, :RpS_laugh: what type of work you been doing internal/ external

damn! £1600 for a course on plastering. You would be better off spending that money on tools and a van/car. Then hunt around your neighbour hoods and offer to go to work for free with a couple of different plasterers (because every plasterer is a bit different and you may learn more or get better advice from different ones, perhaps try ask around, see can you find someone reputable). if they choose to pay you at the end of the week bonus! if not, at least you didnt have to pay for the expierience you got. you never know, they may even keep you on if your good enough.
i reckon this would be a much better approach,

A joke that only works in yorkshire.
A man goes into the vet because his cats ill. The vet says...'is it a tom?' And the man replies ' No, I've got it here in t'basket'.

the only job most DIY,ers wont attempt is plastering.. so how come coursers choose to attempt learning plastering as opposed to other trades ??

Yeh. but it takes that long to learn, ... so are the training centres telling them its easy and they can make a living doing a short course ?? if so, they are conning them and should be brought to book, preferably with a 2x4...
