Stabilizing Sandstone

I could really do with some expert advice how to proceed with this repair.

Below is a photo of a sandstone lintel over a basement door. Directly above it is the front door of the main building. The basement door effectively sits in the stair arch. The external steps were cement skimmed probably in the 1970s. At some point a crack formed across the width of the top step and water got into the sandstone arch. The crack has now been sealed with a specialist epoxy and the sandstone is nice and dry.

When I investigated the flakey paint, I found that most was painted directly onto the sandstone but that there was some topcoat plaster squaring up the corner between the wooden door frame and sandstone surface. When I picked at it, some of it came away. On the right hand side there is a bit of a void, and the stone inside is a bit soft.

The question is, what is the best way to stabilize the soft stone to be able to fill the void as I want to restore the corner and repaint? Or should I be thinking of a different way to hide the hole to decorate?

The stone doesn't need reinforcement. I just need to way for the plaster to grip that inner surface in the hollow to right in the photo. the rest of the surface is good and sound.
