i have seen a plasterer when applying second coat only going one way and not repeating motion on what he has spread, i asked why and he said you get a flatter finish

you should only ever apply skimming one way mate

Sometimes you can knick it coming back. I always go back and forth a couple of times except when there's an awkward bit like a courner where they couldn't get any furniture out. Everyones diferent, some will say do and some will say don't

you will end up with loads of grain in the finish like air bubbles ,5hit way if you ask me

Also a very lazy way. Keep your filla at hand
