Shadow beads

I had to use these last week on a job for some sort ov lunatic asylum. They had to be bedded on around door frames and window frames and around the skirting area, does any1 know the reason for this sort of bead.
 
A shadow gap is normally used just to create a contemporary feature if you are not using architrave etc, but it also stops the potential cracking point of plastering tight to a frame .
 
im guessing they were used in an asylum to stop the risk of them harming themselves on edges of arcitrave and skirtings? just a thought.
