Serrated edge & notched trowel

I get the boarding flat then use a serrated trowel. Bed mesh in then light skim over. Always flat and problem free.

Best way to use a serrated spatch for the base adhesive. It will give you a more even and measured depth over the surface.

You want the mesh as close to the surface of the base as possible but it does need to be completely covered with the base. So ideally

5mm of base behind the mesh and 1mm over the top.

But realistically 4mm behind and 2mm on top.

A good way to get the base right is use a 10x10 serrated Swiss trowel. This gives a 5mm coat when spatched down. Lay the mesh gently onto the surface of the grooves then gently spatch down to take all loose mesh and kinks etc. When it firms up you can pass over with a skim of 1mm with you trowel and finish as you go off the blade. I find this leaves a perfect job but sometimes you need a bit of speed then a 2pass system is replaces by a one process system.

Hope this helps
