Repairing cracks the best option?
Can anyone recommend the best way to repair this crack, so far ive opened it up and was planning to wire mesh it, then bond it and skim as its quite deep and runs from skirting to ceiling. what mesh should i use? will this prevent it opening up again? any better alternative methods? how to fit mesh to wall screw or fit using bonding?

All help appreciated.

It appears structural, a sheet of eml, could be screwed over it with building paper underneath,a tight coat of bonding and then skim..

Hi john,

Thanks for the quick reply, i will give that a go. What does the building paper do/purpose?

advice much appreciated.

Hi john,

The paper in my opinion will allow some movement of the crack without a crack been in the plaster, your job has many options and I am sure others will differ with me...

this looks like a straight joint in the brickwork.
i would cut the plaster off 6 inches either side of the crack. clean out the crack with a drill, fill the crack with fischer resin, fit eml on the brickwork with plugs and screws, float out and set

Hi malc,

Yes it is a straight joint in the brickwork. Fischer resin thats interesting what exactly is it or its intended purpose? Can you also advise or recommend how to attach building paper to a wall?

Thanks all advice appreciated.

fischer resin is a chemical bond ,used in the building industury for fixings. it comes in a tube like mastic, but you do need a larger resin gun to use it,
it bonds the joints in the brickwork together with a lot of strength. this is one of the methods that we use for crack repairs for structural engineers
you can purchase fischer resin from fixing cos.

Helix bars? Theres a good few alternatives then.
Can anyone tell me what building paper is and how to apply to cracks as mentioned in the earlier post.
With regard to minor cracks i.e. that run down corners of walls where internal meets external could you rake out, caulk or gripfill? What would be the best method.

buiding paper is brown paper with a tar like substance within,it can only be fitted behind a mesh which is then screwed on.minor cracks can be raked out and filled with filler mixed with pva for flexibility or caulk, you can scrim tape over them too..
